Age spots, commonly known as sun spots, liver spots and lentigines are flat, harmless discolorations affecting one's face, appearing on the surface of the skin. While some may consider these spots to increase a person's aesthetic appeal, others desire to get rid of them as soon as possible, believing that they actually decrease it.

Causes behind Age Spots

Sun exposure is the main trigger of these spots. Yet, when this phenomenon affects people older than 40, the condition is referred to as age spots. Even though the reasons behind these spots are benign in most cases, liver problems and nutrient deficiency can also act as culprits.

Speaking of sun exposure, it leads to overproduction of melanin, a pigment which protects our skin, causing it to tan. But, there are cases where the melanin cells may lose consistency and organization, leading to age spots and irregular coloring of the skin.

When it comes to possible treatments for this problem, many people use over-the-counter creams or certain chemicals which have more side-effects than actual positive effects. Therefore, the following lines will present healthy home remedies for removing age spots.

Home Remedies for Age Spots

The first line of defense against age spots is grating a 4 inch long piece of horseradish, adding quarter of a cup of apple cider vinegar to the mixture. Then, stir it all up and let it rest for about 2 weeks. Nevertheless, do not forget to shake it at least once every day, keeping it cool in your refrigerator. Then, take some of it and apply it on the age spots 3 times a day. Keep in mind that you might be allergic to some of the ingredients, so consult with an expert beforehand.

Onion Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar Mixture

Alternatively, you can use a mixture of 2 tablespoons of onion juice and the same amount of apple cider vinegar. Get the juice from the onion by chopping it into small pieces and squeezing the product. The mixture is to be applied onto the problematic spots.

Lemon Juice

Since times immemorial people have used the skin whitening power of lemon juice. Thus, benefit from this heritage and apply lemon juice onto the age spots twice a day for two months and be amazed by the results. Castor oil may have the same effects, preventing inflammations as well. Just make sure you keep it away from your eyes and internal parts of your body.

Aloe Vera Gel

Finally, aloe vera gel applied two times a day can do wonders for your skin, removing age spots and so can the oil from vitamin E capsules, extracted and applied directly onto the spots.

Fresh Chick Peas

If none of the above seem to work, try 1/3 of a cup of fresh chick peas mashed into a paste. Leave it over the spots until the mass dries up. Once this happens, remove it by washing your face. Ultimately, you can leave green papaya on the troublesome spots for about 20 minutes daily, washing it away later.
