Skin of the feet is particularly prone to dryness, flakiness and cracking. If the skin is severely dry, especially in the heels, it can develop rather deep cracks that are not only unattractive, but also very painful. Luckily, there are many things one can do to repair the damaged and cracked skin.

Natural remedies for cracked feet

One of the simplest remedies for cracked heels is the application of ripe banana. The pulp should be rubbed or massaged into cracked skin for ten or 15 minutes, after which it should be rinsed off with lukewarm water.

Petroleum jelly mixed with lemon juice is one of the oldest remedies for cracked heels. This mixture is easily absorbed into the skin and gives great results. After it is applied to the affected skin, the feet should be covered with clean cotton socks.

Glycerin and rose water is another traditional remedy. This mixture should be applied once a week and it helps if the feet are previously soaked in warm water for 15 minutes. Coconut oil also helps a lot.

Those who are too lazy to make home remedies can simply soak the feet each day in warm water with some shampoo or shower gel in it and to rub the cracked heels or other parts of the feet with pumice stone.

Baking soda or apple cider vinegar can also be added to the water used for soaking the feet. These remedies also relieve foot pain and relax tired feet, and they even prevent some of the common foot infections.

Feet care tips

In order to prevent cracked skin of the feet and to assure the feet always look nice and soft, it is important to pamper them as much as the face and the hands are pampered. This means regular application of foot creams or regular lotions, especially before bedtime; soaking the feet in warm water and pumicing rough areas at least twice a week; avoiding walking barefoot in dirt and dust and cleaning the feet after wearing sandals or flip-flops.

Feet need special care in the winter, because of the cold and harsh weather, but also in the summer, when many people go barefoot. If the first signs of dryness appear, the skin of the feet should be thoroughly moisturized to prevent cracking.

Having a pedicure once a month is the best way to keep the feet in good shape and looking nice, as long as it is done in a clean salon with sterilized equipment.
