People who suffer from diabetes usually have a lot of trouble choosing which food items they are allowed to eat, so they need to be very careful. A diet for a person who suffers from diabetes cannot include a wide range of foods. In spite of all those restrictions, diabetics still may enjoy a wide array of healthy types of snacks. In recent years, the food industry started paying a lot of attention to diabetics and started introducing various food items which are appropriate for them.

Which Foods Diabetics Should be Avoiding

People who suffer from diabetes are not allowed to eat sugar in any form. Not a lot of people are aware of the fact that diabetics are not allowed to consume excessive amounts of simple carbohydrates. Carbohydrates get broken down into sugars once they get to the liver, so they increase the levels of sugar in the blood as well, which is not a good thing for those who suffer from diabetes. Those who suffer from diabetes also need to steer clear of all different types of fried food and alcoholic beverages.

Healthy Snacks for Diabetics

There are certain types of healthy snacks for diabetics, but they cannot involve any simple carbohydrates or sugars, at least not in some excessive amounts. The craving for sugars and carbohydrates is a fairly common thing for most people. One of the most popular types of snacks everywhere around the world is popcorn. Good news for all diabetics is that they do not have to restrain themselves on popcorn. They need to be air popped, and not a lot of salt should be used.

White Meat, Salads and Fruits

White meat such as turkey and chicken is highly recommended for diabetics. Various different types of salads and sandwiches are a go. Tuna is also a healthy option. The choice of fruits for diabetics is unfortunately much narrower than the choices for all other people. Fruits recommended for all those who suffer from diabetes include apricots, blueberries, grapefruit and apples. Watermelons, grapes and dates need to be avoided as much as possible, due to their high content of sugar. All fruits need to be consumed in moderate amounts, while dried fruits need to be avoided as well.

Other Snacks

Another recommended option are whole grain crackers because they contain abundant amounts of complex carbohydrates. All different types of nuts are also an excellent snack option for all those who suffer from diabetes. Other options include cauliflower, broccoli, cucumber, carrots, skim milk, cottage cheese, low fat yogurt and so on.
