Introduction to Pizza

Pizza is almost everyone’s favorite kind of food and there are not many people that can resist a hot, cheesy slice. There are also so many great toppings that can go on a pizza, and one really can’t go wrong, because everything tastes good on the thick crust, tomato sauce and cheese of the pizza.

However, pizza can be very fattening and unhealthy and when a person piles on the toppings, they run the risk of gaining a lot of weight when eating pizza frequently.

However, even pizza can be made into a healthy food if the person chooses the right toppings.

If the right, healthy and low-fat toppings are put on a pizza, it can instantly become a guilt-free and healthy lunch choice.

Thankfully, there are many toppings to choose from that are low in calories and fat and also nutritious.

Healthy Toppings

Believe it or not, meat toppings on pizzas can be healthy.

Instead of putting sausage and beef on a pizza, some seafood and fish products are a nice change of pace and a lot healthier. For example, anchovies and shrimp are always good on a pizza and provide the body with Omega 4 fatty acids that will improve the health of the heart.

However, if you do not like seafood, there are still options. Use some thin slices of low-salt baked turkey or chicken instead.

It is best to stay away from the regular meat toppings such as pepperoni, salami, ham and bacon because they are loaded with fat and sodium.

Obviously, it is always better and healthier to put vegetable toppings on a pizza instead of meat.

Vegetables such as onions and green peppers not only taste great, but they are packed with antioxidants. Other great vegetables that can be added are artichokes, black beans, broccoli, red peppers, roasted garlic, spinach, and squash or watercress.

An underrated pizza toping is avocado.

Mushrooms are also great and can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women.

Healthy herbs and spices can also be added to a pizza to make it smell and taste even better. Basil, cumin, garlic, rosemary, oregano and pepper can all be sprinkled on the pizza and they are a lot healthier than just pouring a lot of salt all over the pizza.

There are actually healthy and low-fat cheeses that can taste great on a pizza as well.

People should be avoiding cheddar and try switching it up with feta or goat cheese.

Parmesan is another kind of cheese that is a lot lower in fat and delicious.
