Healthy picnic food

Usually, the traditional food associated with a picnic is not very healthy and includes a lot of fried chicken, potato salad and just about everything that can be served with mayonnaise.

When a person thinks of picnics and the food that is usually brought to such events, they thing of the mayo-rich salads like potato salad and coleslaw, as well as beers, fried chicken, hamburgers, hot bogs, and of course, brownies, cookies, and ice cream as well.

However, there are many things that can be just as tasty and satisfying at a picnic, while being healthy at the same time.

Fruits and vegetables

There should be more fruits and vegetables brought to a picnic definitely. There are many easy and healthy dishes that can be prepared.

A person can bring fresh fruit to a picnic, that will be great for everyone. Great summer treats include peaches, cherries, watermelon, and any other kinds of berries.

As far as vegetable dishes are concerned, a person can use broccoli slaw instead of coleslaw and toss in some carrots with low-ft poppy seed or yogurt dressing for a salad that will be a lot more healthy and have a lot less calories than coleslaw.

Vegetable salads can be prepared earlier, but people can also grill vegetables instead f hamburgers and hot dogs. Mushrooms, red peppers, zucchini and onions can all be put on the grill and even served on a bun for a delicious meal. Light appetizers

Some nice appetizers to pack in the cooler can be crisp, raw veggies like cucumbers, carrots, celery and cherry tomatoes. They can be coupled with healthy and delicious dips such as hummus, salsa, fat free, bean dip or low fat yogurt with herbs and spices. Change the main dish

Instead of fried chicken or burgers, there are other delicious and much healthier meat options as the main course of a picnic. One idea is to pick up a roasted chicken on the way to the picnic, which is a lot healthier than greasy, fried chicken.

Wraps are another option and they are perfect for picnics because they are not only easy to transport, but can also be very healthy and nutritious when made with lean meat and stuffed with all kinds of healthy vegetables and low-fat dressing.

They can be made of skinless chicken breasts, pork tenderloin, soy or even veggie burgers, and will be just as tasty as other less healthy dishes.
