Hormonal changes in the body may provoke different problems, including the loss of hair. Male sex hormone, also known as androgen, is proven to have important part in both the production of hair and baldness.

Hormones and Hair Loss

As scientific research showed up, baldness is usually the result of increased level of dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Reaction between androgen and testosterone produces increased amount of DHT. This hormone is more potent than testosterone and it has been proven to be linked to many cases of hair loss. Several clinical studies have confirmed that about 95% of all cases of hair loss can be associated directly with increased level of dihydrotestosterone. This link between DHT and baldness is proven to be genetic and this is something that can be inherited from the parents. Overproduction of this hormone is sometimes seen in several generations in one family.

DHT works by affecting hair follicles on the scalp. Androgen receptors in the dermal papilla interact with this hormone, affecting the process of hair growth. DHT negatively affects the delivery of different nutrients important for the hair and consequently follicles get deprived of these vitamins and nutrients. As the result, follicles shrink and after some time the hair stops growing and the person becomes bald.

Hair Loss Treatment

There are several solutions and possible treatments for hair loss. All these products are designed to prevent further loss of hair and also to support generation and growth of new hair. Propecia and Minoxidil are the most popular treatment for hair loss these days.

Propecia or Finasteride is prescription medication in the form of tablets. It contains 1mg of active substance and should be used once per day, according to the prescription. Some 99% of patients with hair loss who used Propecia experienced some improvement in male pattern baldness, while some of them noticed regeneration of hair as well. This pill works by blocking production of DHT and its effects on the hair, but it shouldn’t be used in women. Studies confirmed that Propecia could negatively affect fertility and reproduction in females and therefore they shouldn’t use this product.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) comes in two strengths and can be used in men and women. Rogaine2% is designed for women hair loss and Rogaine 5% is for men and their problems with the loss of hair. At first, Minoxidil was developed as the treatment for high blood pressure, but after the patients noticed excessive growth of hair with this drug, it started the life as hair loss solution.
