Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT is the main cause of hair loss in humans, being responsible for this phenomenon in over 95% of cases. Therefore, people usually try to counter the occurrence of hair loss through blocking DHT. This can be done through keeping this chemical from attaching to certain receptors in the hair follicles, or by reducing the production of DHT in the first place. Additionally, enzyme 5 alpha can be stopped from converting testosterone into DHT, preventing hair loss this way. Finally, enzyme 5 alpha production can be inhibited in order to achieve the same effect.

DHT Blockers

DHT blockers are medications which can be used in order to prevent DHT from damaging hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Once this is accomplished, the affected hair follicles will start producing hair again, regaining the former quality in time. This way, one may stop total hair loss and regain his/her hair. If hair follicles get damaged and this effect of DHT gets neglected, the quality of hair will drop and, eventually, the hair production will cease completely.

The Drug

Propecia is the most commonly used medication, designed to prevent hair loss caused by DHT. The medication lowers DHT levels by blocking the above mentioned, 5 alpha enzyme. Unfortunately, like many other medications of this type, Propecia has certain side-effects. Basically, libido decrease, erection inhibition and reduction in semen concentration are the most common adverse effects affecting males. However, pregnant women may suffer too since the drug can attack the fetus, causing complications even when small dosages are used.

It is important to know that excessive concentration of DHT in a male's organism can lead to hair loss, even at a young age. Therefore, you should give your best to control DHT levels in your body. Luckily, you can achieve this through a healthy lifestyle and some natural, herbal medications.

Saw Palmetto

As far as natural DHT blockers are concerned, saw palmetto is the most commonly used one, being quite similar to Propecia, when it comes to the effectiveness. Numerous tests were conducted and this medication is now well-known for its lack of side-effects and effective inhibition of DHT. The only minor side-effects present during various studies and tests were stomach irritation and indigestion symptoms. However, these too can be removed by taking saw palmetto after you have eaten something.

All in all, preventing hair loss in men and women is something which can be done, contrary to popular beliefs. However, in order for this to be possible, one needs to be careful and take good care of his/her hair and overall lifestyle, promoting health.
