Rash on the back of the neck is skin condition that usually affects children and teenagers, while adults are less likely to develop this problem. Besides being very itchy, rash is known to cause moderate pain. Some people may also notice the swelling of the affected skin, since the rash affects epidermis and changes it.

Skin Problems That Cause Rash on Back of Neck

Acne, dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis are some of the skin problems that might be associated with rash on the back of the neck in some cases. Acne can occur on different parts of the human body, including the portion of the skin on the back of the neck. Affected skin is full of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. Sometimes it might be just the back of the neck affected by acne, so you could try OTC (over the counter) products developed for acne to get rid of this problem on your neck. Dermatologists suggest buying products with salicylic acid, since these are proven to work efficiently against acne in many cases.

Dermatitis or inflammation of the skin is characterized with rash, itchiness and swelling of the skin. Scratching the skin is not good for you if you are suffering from dermatitis, for it may lead to redness of the skin and irritation. So, even if it does itch, try not to scratch it. Dermatitis can be cause by allergy to the material of your jewelry (metals or even rubber) worn around the neck. Wearing something you are allergic to around your neck could lead to irritation and possibly itchy rash on the back of your neck.

People suffering from eczema usually experience sudden red and itchy rash. It may happen all over the body or reaction can be localized and affect certain areas, such as the back of the neck. Some of the causes that can contribute to the development of eczema are various soaps or excessive sweating.

Rash on the back of the neck may also be provoked by psoriasis. This skin problems commonly affect the face, back or the neck and patients experience pus filled blisters and a lot of skin burning.

Other Causes of Neck Rash

Some medications or food allergies can also cause rash on the back of the neck. Prescription drugs can damage the skin and provoke skin rash. When that happens, most doctors advise their patients to discontinue using the drug and switch to some other treatment.

Allergic reactions may also be blamed for skin rash and itchy sensations. If the rash is limited to one specific area of the body that’s a good sign, meaning the food allergy is mild. Serious cases of food allergies often cause generalized rash and significant amount of swelling.
