Any skin rash, bump, or other symptom that affects the appearance of the skin can be very distressful, uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially when it appears on a part of the skin that's highly visible. Unfortunately, even if we take great care of our skin and hair, we may be faced with a red and bumpy skin rash. What then?

A red bumpy rash: A source of discomfort

A rash is one of many symptoms of a skin disorder or irritation that can manifest through red bumps, lumps, pimples or blisters. Everyone is susceptible to this skin condition, which can be induced by various allergies and hives, as well as by dermatitis. A red and bumpy skin rash is not usually an indication of a serious health condition, but it can cause a lot of discomfort for a person.

The stress you may feel if you have a nasty skin rash can only be amplified if it appears on visible body parts. Furthermore, if your red skin rash is accompanied by several other symptoms, it can be a sign of some other health problem. In most cases, a red bumpy rash occurs on the face, but also it can appear in the groin, armpits, and back, or anywhere else on the skin.

Causes a of red bumpy rash

Many causes could be responsible for the outbreak of a red bumpy rash. Many chemicals, insect bites and medications, as well as plants or weeds, may cause this condition. A diet that doesn't suit you, and various allergies, may also induce red bumpy rash. Dermatitis is a skin disorder marked by an itchy red bumpy rash accompanied by swelling and skin irritation. This condition, as well as hidradenitis suppurativa, also cause red bumpy rash.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is the medical term for a red bumpy rash that occurs on the parts of the body that are covered with hair, such as armpits, for example.

The condition that is medically called urticaria is popularly known as hives, and is caused by certain allergens that lead to histamine production in the body. This can include medications, infections, or food products.

Common red bumpy rashes

The three most common red bumpy rashes are eczema, irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.

Eczema, also termed as atopic dermatitis, usually affects children, but adults can also suffer from eczema. The most common symptom of this type of red bumpy rash is a dry and chapped skin near the knees and elbows.

Irritant contact dermatitis happens after the skin is exposed to some skin irritant, such as soap, detergent, or another chemical. It is considered that sunburn is a type of irritant contact dermatitis.

The third most common red bumpy rash is an allergic contact rash, which occurs when the body comes in contact with various allergens. Anything that causes an allergic reaction is considered an allergen. For example, a metal, hair dye or any other object can cause an allergy in people who are hypersensitive to them.

If your bumpy red rash gets worse rather than better, or causes extreme discomfort, you should seek medical attention. In cases where you are quite sure of the cause and know it is not threatening, you can refrain from scratching, ask for an over the counter cream to help your skin heal, and wait for the rash to go away.
