As everyone knows, a nice smile can open the many doors. But what to do if the smile is less than perfect, and if the teeth are less than white? It makes a person feel self-conscious, shy and less available.

What causes teeth discoloration?

Teeth lose their brightness due to many factors. Age is one of them, and it is, unfortunately, inevitable. The enamel that covers and protects the teeth wears off with time and it is more susceptible to stains.

Another major factor for teeth discoloration is smoking. It is observed that smokers have more trouble keeping their teeth white. Tobacco accumulates and stains the teeth and it also causes black spots.

Coffee and tea, wine and dark-colored sodas are well-known enemies of white teeth, as they cause significant staining. Intensely colored foods are also to be avoided by people who want to keep their teeth bright and white.

Finally, various dental diseases, as well as nutritional deficiencies and even some diseases unrelated to teeth can all cause teeth to look yellowish, gray or stained.

There are many ways to brighten and whiten the teeth. procedures like bleaching are done at the dentist’s office, and there are also whitening strips, gels and toothpastes. However, there are also natural ways to whiten the teeth at home, using basic ingredients found in kitchen or bathroom cabinets.

How to whiten teeth naturally?

There are many folk remedies for tooth whitening, but the question is are they safe? The important thing is to choose a method that does not harm the teeth by weakening the enamel. Very abrasive substances, acids and similar all tend to damage the enamel and make the tooth weak and prone to decay.

One of the most popular natural remedies for teeth whitening is baking soda. It can be combined with some water to make a thick paste, which is then used for brushing. However, this should not be done very often, best if only once a month.

Strawberries are also believed to be very efficient against yellow, discolored teeth. one or two ripe strawberries, brushed against the teeth for several minutes, will leave the teeth look much whiter.

A bit of charcoal powder used for brushing can help too, as long as it is properly rinsed afterwards.

One simple way to whiten the teeth naturally is to use olive oil. A cotton ball or pad for make-up removal is soaked in some extra virgin olive oil and rubbed against the teeth. The oil does not damage the teeth and it is also beneficial for the gums.

It is, however, strongly recommended to consult a dentist before using any natural method of teeth whitening, and not to overdo it. Teeth whitening once a month is safe and sufficient.
