Face masks are an essential part of any skin care routine. They provide elements that cannot be obtained through moisturizers and lotions, and their purpose can be to rejuvenate, refresh, deeply cleanse the skin, tighten it, moisturize it or soothe it.

There is absolutely no need to purchase ready-made masks from specialized stores or to go to a spa or to a cosmetician for a facial. Most of the ingredients for a good facial mask are already there, in the kitchen cabinet, and if they are not, they are widely available and inexpensive.

Home-made face masks are not only cheaper, but they are also safer for the skin than any other treatment. They use only controlled, natural ingredients that cannot harm the skin in any way.

There is a wide array of face mask recipes designed for each of the skin types. Here are some of them.

Purifying clay face mask

This mask works great on any skin type. It deeply cleanses the skin, opens and purifies the pores and leaves the skin feeling fresh and immaculately clean.

The ingredients for this mask include three teaspoons of green powdered clay, three tablespoons of aloe vera gel, four drops of rose essential oil and two tablespoons of rosewater. Although they may sound exotic, all these ingredients are available in any beauty store or health food shop.

The ingredients should be mixed together well, so they form a smooth paste. If it is too thick, additional rose water can be added, and if it is too liquid, it helps to add more clay.

The paste should be applied to freshly cleaned face and left to dry for about 15 minutes. After this time, the mask is rinsed off gently but thoroughly with warm water.

The leftover paste can be stored in the refrigerator for 30 days.

Banana face mask

Banana face mask is a great solution for oily skin. It requires one ripe banana, one tablespoon of honey and three drops of lemon juice. The banana is mashed and combined with honey and lemon juice, applied to the face and left for twenty minutes, before rinsing with cool water. In case not all of the mask can be rinsed with water, the remains can be removed with a clean wet washcloth.

Yogurt face mask

This is a great mask for all skin types, but it is particularly beneficial for dry, itchy, sensitive or sunburned skin, because it has amazing cooling and soothing properties.

The ingredients include two tablespoons of yogurt and two teaspoons of soft honey. The yogurt should be plain, full-fat and natural, without any additives, flavors, colors or preservatives.

The yogurt and the honey are mixed together well and applied to the face, leaving it for 20 minutes. The mask is removed using cotton balls or washcloth dipped in warm water.

If a few drops of lemon juice are added to it, this becomes a great mask for oily skin too.
