A Word or Two about Self-esteem

Self-esteem is one of the most crucial components of our personality. People who are widely accepted and praised by other members of society tend to have high self-esteem up to the point of vanity and narcissism. On the other hand, those who are doubtful about themselves and find it hard to consider themselves worthy of other people's attention suffer from low self-esteem and are usually incapable of functioning correctly in the society. Thus, a balance needs to be established between the two extremes in order for a stable person to exist.

Tips and Tricks for Boosting One's Self-esteem

Before any changes are to be made, you should first accept yourself for who you are. This involves acknowledging all your flaws and virtues, without judging yourself negatively. If there is something you do not like about yourself, try and change it for the better. Do not spend your life feeling sorry for yourself or hating yourself. Rather, be proud of everything you are and make sure you do everything in your power to make yourself a person satisfying your standards. Do not fear giving yourself and helping others. This will make you feel more valuable, raising your self-esteem.

Also, when others give you a compliment, accept it with a “thank you”, acknowledging that you are worthy of the appraisal. Keep reminding yourself about your value and virtues by carrying a card with all positive facts about you written. Nobody is perfect, but we are all good at something and this something can make all the difference once we lack self-esteem. Alternatively, you can use CDs, tapes, or other materials about self-esteem, learning how to manage and maintain it better.

Additionally, learn how to cherish what you have. No one is alone in this world; we only forget what we have. Sometimes a good friend is the most valuable thing in the universe. Thus, if you have someone there for you, never think that you are alone. Take good care of yourself, through grooming, hygiene and clothing. Spend time around positive, happy people while avoiding pessimists and other negative individuals.

Finally, take action. Do not sit and wait for self-esteem to come on its own. Rather, be a problem solver, leave your worries and fears behind, moving forward through life confident and proud of yourself and your positive actions. There will always be someone who is better than you, and someone who is not. So, do not bother yourself with these comparisons and enjoy being in your skin.
