Candida albicans is a fungus that, if it overgrows, causes yeast infection in different parts of the body. This fungus is very persistent and it takes some time and patience to get rid of it completely. Physicians prescribe appropriate antifungal treatment for this infection, but they also recommend following a diet that will help get better fast.
Candida Diet Basics
The idea behind the diet recommended for people who have Candida infection is very simple. It excludes the foods that the fungus feeds on, so that it starves to death and vanishes from the body.
The number one food on the list of foods to avoid is sugar. Sugar is one of the main foods for fungus. There are different types of sugars, and they usually and in –ose, like dextrose, maltose and sucrose. Honey, maple sugar and similar foods are prohibited too. It is not enough to simply eliminate sweets, because there are hidden sugars in almost all packaged and processed foods, which is why it is important to carefully read the label.
This does not mean that food cannot be sweetened at all. Artificial sweeteners like xylitol are allowed, and it is even better to opt for natural sweeteners, like the amazing stevia.
The other thing to strictly avoid on Candida diet are carbohydrates, because they raise blood sugar levels or glucose, especially simple ones found in processed foods and grains. It is almost impossible to avoid all carbohydrates, but it is recommended to avoid simple ones and opt for complex carbohydrates instead.
Starchy foods, like potatoes and corn, should be avoided too, because starch contains glucose.
Other foods that Candida feeds on and that therefore should be eliminated from the Candida diet are fungi, fermented foods like vinegar, alcohol, soy sauce, picked foods, baked goods and moldy fruits.
What to eat on Candida diet
Foods that are allowed on Candida diet include mostly fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry. Organic food is always a better choice, and as for the meats, processed ones should be avoided.
Vegetables that should be the big part of this diet are those that are not too starchy. This means fewer potatoes and more green leafy vegetables, carrots, tomatoes and other veggies.
As for the fruit, it is better to choose those that are not too sweet. Apples are probably the best choice, and melons and grapes should be cut down to minimum.
Vegetable oils are allowed, especially if they are cold-pressed or extra virgin.
It is also important to drink plenty of water, preferably bottled or filtered, because tap water contains chlorine.
