Overview of Procrastination

Procrastination is a complex psychological behavior that affects everyone to some degree or another. With some it can be a minor problem; with others it is a source of considerable stress and anxiety. Procrastination may result in stress, a sense of guilt and crisis, severe loss of personal productivity, as well as social disapproval for not meeting responsibilities or commitments. These feelings combined may promote further procrastination. While it is regarded as normal for people to procrastinate to some degree, and it becomes a problem when it impedes normal functioning.

The procrastinator is often very optimistic about his ability to complete a task on a tight deadline; this is usually accompanied by expressions of reassurance that everything is under control.

There are some characteristics typical for procrastinators, such as low self-esteem. The procrastinator may struggle with feelings of low self-confidence and low self-esteem. He may insist upon a high level of performance even though he may feel inadequate or incapable of actually achieving that level.

Next, he may express stubbornness, try a number of ways to manipulate others, and may feel like a frustrated victim.

Types of Procrastinators

The relaxed type

This type of procrastinators views their responsibilities negatively and avoids them by directing energy into other tasks. However, although they may not appear to be worried about work, this is simply an evasion of the work that needs to be completed

The tense-afraid type

They usually feel overwhelmed with pressure, unrealistic about time, and many other negative feelings. They may feel depressed. Feeling that they lack the ability or focus to successfully complete their work, they tell themselves that they need to unwind, that it's better to take it easy for the afternoon, for example, and start afresh in the morning. They usually have grand plans that aren't realistic. However, this type of behavior only leads to more stress.

First of all, procrastinators need to realize what they are doing and with a few steps, try to correct their behavior. First of all, one should realize that he is delaying something completely unnecessary. Then, one should try and find the real reasons for doing so, and try and overcome them.
