Jaggery is perhaps best known under the name “unrefined sugar”, which is primarily used on the territory of India. Among the health benefits it possesses, the most important are its power to disinfect and purify the body, its potential to function as a digestive cleansing substance, be an extremely healthy food sweetener and a rich source of minerals.
Even though we have, today, at our disposal so many food sweeteners what needs to be emphasised is that they mostly fulfill only those basic sweetening functions. But the jaggery goes even one step further; it not only sweetens the food but also gives it a richer, fuller and most of all special taste. When all this taken into consideration, jaggery is actually that one thing which makes the difference when it comes to food flavour. It is a real magician when making food taste better and more colourful. Besides this function, jaggery also has a say in providing high quantities of energy for our body. Namely, in a sense it represents a complex form of carbohydrates, unlike the 4 plain sugar we use on daily basis. Therefore what it affects is also body’s digestion and substance absorption in the sense that it is, both absorbed and digested more smoothly and spontaneously and as a direct result of this the energy released is also more spontaneous and balanced. Another “consequence” of this is that this way our body acquires more energy and heath which lasts longer and has no negative effects on our organs whatsoever. As a cleanser, jaggery is extremely beneficial as a weapon for purifying and “cleaning” intestines, stomach, lungs and food pipes.
Though it may appear somewhat odd, given its properties, jaggery is recommended, especially in India, for the treatment of digestive problems and difficulties. Furthermore, a few grams taken after a heavier meal boost our digestion by means of activating enzymes essential in digestion process. Additionally it has the property of transforming into acetic acid when inside the stomach, which gives digestion that more than needed kick.
But the benefits of jaggery don’t end here. It abounds in minerals, especially in iron. Also, in comparison with the regular types of sugar it does not cause the occurrence of acidity. This is very important since with the decrease in acidity activity enables our body to function properly, which in turn makes it possible for us to avoid such awkward and unpleasant conditions and thus live healthier and more pleasant lives.
