What is silica?
Silica is a mineral found abundantly in nature and in the Earth’s crust. In the human body, there is about 5 grams of the silica, making it an essential element for metabolic processes. Silica plays a role in mineral absorption and in the production of antibodies. It also contributes to healthy bones, skin, nails and hair. With age, the concentration of silica in the body tends to decline.
Benefits of Silica
The benefits of silica are numerous. First of all, it slows down the aging process. It participates in cell metabolism and promotes cell division. As it is involved in the production of collagen and elastin, it strengthens the hair and helps the skin to regenerate. Thanks to these properties, it also promotes the elasticity and mobility of joints and reduces pain associated with rheumatism and osteoarthritis. Silica also contributes to the health of cardiovascular system by lowering high blood pressure, regulating circulation and strengthening blood vessels.
Silica exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, which help treat the inflammation of the middle ear and the intestinal tract. The mineral is also capable of getting rid of both constipation and diarrhea. Furthermore, it normalizes hemorrhoidal tissue. Being a natural diuretic, it stimulates excretion and helps prevent kidney stones and urinary tract infections. Swelling in the body is reduced thanks to its effect on the lymphatic system. Good health of lung tissue is maintained owing to silica, while Alzheimer’s disease may be prevented as silica prevents the body from absorbing aluminium, and helps eliminate it from the body. Diabetics also benefit from this mineral as it stimulates the production of elastase enzyme.
Healthy Bones
Silica is essential for bone health. It helps in fighting osteoporosis by aiding the absorption of calcium. The bones need calcium to stay strong, but calcium alone is not enough to achieve this goal. Silica supplements should accompany calcium supplementation, as supplemental calcium only draws the latter from the bones. Furthermore, silica can provide relief from the pain accompanying osteoporosis, and help the body’s repair process in case of bone fractures. Silica supplements are recommended for daily use, since the element deposits minerals into the bones. Some evidence point to the fact that silica can be converted to calcium when necessary, thus compensating for the lack of calcium.
Hair and skin
Aging of the connective tissue is caused by decreased amounts of silica. Silica is also a main constituent of collagen, which is responsible for youthful appearance. Daily silica supplementation will restore hair luster and firm skin.
