There are many couples each month that try to conceive a baby and experience failure. For some, the reasons can be solved by doing a simple dietary or lifestyle change and for others the reasons need to be explored in depth and testing may need to be done.

Unexplainable infertility is a term used to describe idiopathic infertility, which means a definite cause cannot be determined even after testing has been done. Standard fertility testing for couples trying to conceive is not something all experts can come to an agreement about. Medical testing and statistical information cites that 10-20% of infertile couples fall under the category of unexplainable infertility. However, these statistics come from studies conducted on women that had undergone laparoscopy surgery due to pelvic scarring from endometriosis. The procedure is no longer considered standard when doctors are performing fertility tests, which means that more people will fall into the unexplainable category.

There are a number of things that need to happen in order for a couple trying to conceive a baby, the timing must be perfect and both individuals must be fertile. A number of biological and molecular events have to happen perfectly in order for pregnancy to happen, and for an infertile couple it can be impossible without reproductive assistance. Standard fertility tests cannot even begin to scratch the true surface of infertility, but there are many other factors involved. A diagnosis of unexplained infertility is increased in women over the age of 35 and increases even more in women over the age of 38. Most women will have trouble conceiving after a certain age because of decrease in egg health and due to certain bodily influences.

Unfortunately, even with some of the most advanced and innovate fertility testing available, the reasons will still remain a mystery. For couples that have been trying to get pregnant for a long time, a diagnosis of unexplained infertility can be a heartbreaking reality. There are certain assisted reproductive techniques which can be used to increase the chances of conception for childless couples, but even these might not work. For an infertile couple, the best thing to do is always adhere to the instructions of a fertility specialist and never give up hope when trying to have a baby.
