Unexplained infertility is a phenomenon that many couples all over the United States will have to face if conceiving naturally has not happened and medical professionals cannot determine why. When facing a diagnosis of infertility a couple will usually have been trying for a year or more to get pregnant with no results, confirm a history of ovulation and an assessment of the fallopian tubes and uterus and a semen analysis to rule out all the physical possibilities. If all three tests come back normally and the couple has not been able to become pregnant within a year, a diagnosis of unexplained infertility is usually made.

Of the couples seeking reproductive assistance and having no luck, 10-15% experience unexplained infertility. Eventually most couples with the condition will go on to become pregnant, but it can require more tests and possibly assisted reproductive technologies to help conception occur. If IVF has failed and fertility drugs have not yielded positive results in the past, more aggressive methods may need to be explored. For unexplained infertility IUI, involves the use of clomiphene citrate and intrauterine insemination. It is thought that by using fertility drugs to stimulate the production of more eggs it will increase the chances of viable pregnancy. IUI is generally attempted every so many months and the effectiveness relies on the use of 10 ml of inseminated sperm versus 1-4 ml of sperm used when doing IVF.

Intrauterine insemination is not exactly something new, but rather a new name for artificial insemination. When using IUI, it can be most effective in women under the age of 41 years old and is not effective for couples dealing with severe cases of endometriosis, ovarian failure, male factor infertility or fallopian tube blockage or damage. The age of the female has a great deal to do with the success of IUI, so sometimes unexplained infertility has nothing to do with a successful outcome when trying the procedure. Unexplained infertility IUI is something that could be an option for some couples facing the mystery of not knowing what is keeping conception from happening. Dealing with any type of infertility can be heartbreaking and nerve wracking so a couple should always keep an open mind and explore all possible options, because you never know it may be a combination of different things that finally makes the dream of parenthood come true.
