Fresh produce vs skin care products

Everyone who has ever spent more than five minutes in the skin care products isle at the supermarket in a specialized store knows how expensive they can be. Those products, in the majority of cases, also contain preservatives, additives, artificial scents and colors, which are not exactly beneficial for the skin, especially for sensitive skin or for people who suffer from allergies.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, have very few side effects, if any, and they cost much less. This makes fresh produce an ideal ally when it comes to skin care and to fighting problems like acne, oily or dry skin, and even wrinkles.

Beneficial produce for the skin

Avocado is a great food that helps with many problems. It is rich in monounsaturated fats, which makes it perfect for people who suffer from high cholesterol. It can be used as a facial mask if peeled and mashed, preferably after cleaning the skin thoroughly. Avocado has a soothing effect and it nourishes the skin deeply, it can also be used for treating cracked heels.

Cucumber, a vegetable from the squash family, has a very high water content, which is very beneficial for the body and for the skin as well. sliced cucumber can be used to soothe tired eyes, reduce swelling and dark circles, and it can also be used to treat bruises.

Garlic is the nature’s famous antibiotic and it is believed to be able to cure infections. Although it does not smell very nice, it can be used to treat acne, which are basically infections of the skin pores. However, garlic is not recommended for persons who are taking blood thinners because it may increase their effect.

Oats can be used for skin exfoliation, to remove dead skin cells and clean the pores, and they also have an emmolient effect.

Parsley is a plant that is, unfortunately, very underrated, and most people only use it for the purpose of garnishing their dishes. Parsley contains a lot of vitamin C, which is good for the skin whether it is applied as a mask or taken internally. Pregnant women should be careful not to take too much parsley because it may lead to complications, even miscarriage.

Another very beneficial vegetable is tomato, especially if sun ripened on the vines. It has antioxidant properties, contains many different vitamins and minerals, and can be used to treat acne.

Potatoes are very effective for burns and bruises. Their use is simple, all it takes is a raw potato, sliced and placed firmly onto the affected area. Potatoes are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
