Most of us are aware of the benefits healthy nutrition can have for our body and mind. Therefore, we know that once we introduce fresh vegetables and fruits to our diet, we are doing something positive, boosting our health and our overall well-being.

However, this step is not the only one we desire to take, especially if we desire to obtain food from natural, sustainable and environmentally-friendly sources. In these cases, we need to opt for organic food. If you are not sure what organic food stands for, read the lines below.

What is Organic Food?

The “organic” in the organic food stands for the process through which the obtained type of food is grown and produced. Naturally, there are many requirements which need to be met in order for a certain type of food to be called organic.

First of all, organic food needs to be grown in a soil which was not exposed to any kind of chemicals. Also, this sort of food should not get in contact with genetic modification and any conventional products commonly used for growing food. Therefore, the farmers involved in this process are advised not to use synthetic pesticides nor any artificial genes or petroleum-based as well as sewage sludge based fertilizers.

Genetically Modified Organisms

Speaking of genetically modified organisms, this name stands for pants and animals which have undergone artificial genetic mutation in order for their productivity to be increased. So, in order for animals to live in an organic environment, they need to be fed with organic products. Usually, in many parts of the world, genetically modified organisms are only made this way for the sake of research and are rarely used for any other purposes.

This leads to question the differences between organic and non-organic products. Until today, there have been no researches done resulting in proofs that organic food is richer in nutrients than non-organic one. However, some studies indicated that non-organic food lack adequate amounts of vitamin C, minerals and antioxidants, when compared to organic food.

Benefits of Organic Food

Organic food has many different benefits for our organism and for these we are advised to consume it as often as possible. One of these is a lower level of pesticides, since in non-organic products these chemicals are used for prevention of insect infestations. Thus, while non-organic food may contain these harmful chemicals, reaching your body upon consumption, the organic ones are completely safe in this respect.

Pregnant women are especially vulnerable to pesticides in food due to the fact that their immune systems are lowered during this period. Moreover, pesticides can affect the child in the womb too, getting transferred from the mother through her organism and, later, to the child through breastfeeding.

In fact, most of us have eaten products which have been exposed to pesticides for years. This excessive accumulation of these chemicals in our body can easily lead to a development of headaches, birth defects and immune system compromising.

Since organic food does not contain these chemicals, it is often perceived as fresher and better-tasting. Moreover, it is consumed fresh since it does not contain chemicals which expand its freshness abnormally.

Additionally, organic food is grown on smaller farms, thus not being exposed to any neglect, produced in the most natural of all environments. These environments involve low pollution levels, water preservation, soil erosion reduction and a decreased exploitation of energy.

Furthermore, organic food is completely safe for animal consumption and cannot kill these forms of life, apart from pesticide and poison-exposed food which can lead to illnesses and even death. At the same time, people who harvest this type of food are bound to be healthier due to the absence of exposure to chemicals.

Finally, animals raised in organic environment are never exposed to antibiotics, growth hormones or any animal products. Rather, these animals are given more space for their everyday activities. This way, the animals are kept healthy, with their requirements met.

Due to the positive aspects of organic food, people have developed something called local food, being food grown near the place of its market. People purchase this food since it brings the money back into the community, knowing that they the farmers are not spending the money on marketing but, rather on growing more healthy food. Also, this food is not transferred for many hours in vehicles, being exposed to exhaust fumes and pollution. Ultimately, the local food which reaches your place is 100% fresh.

All in all, there are countless of benefits related to organic process of food production. People have noticed most of these positive sides and more and more individuals refuse to purchase conventionally grown food, opting for healthy, organic sources instead.

It is high time we stopped killing each other through our own unhealthy lifestyles. The chemicals we use can lead to our own death, especially when we throw it all away into rivers and other places inhabited by various lifeforms. We have brought this planet enough pain, while getting nothing but safety and support from it. It is about time we paid back our enormous debts by changing our ways once and for all.
