What causes dry eyes?

Dry eyes occur when the eyes are not provided with sufficient moisture, which is to say that the production of tears is quite reduced. This condition is, in fact, quite rare, but when it does happen, it can cause the person a lot of discomfort and pain. In the worst case scenario, one may even require surgery to fix this problem. However, if the condition itself isn’t frequent, then the worst case scenario is even less likely to take place as there are many other ways to get rid of the dry eyes condition. As for the causes, they can be of both environmental and biological nature.

Why do dry eyes occur?

As previously stated, dry eyes occur due to the insufficient production of tears. It’s important to emphasize that this does not refer to the tears which are present when crying, but those consisted of water, mucus, proteins, oils and antibodies. This kind of tears is necessary in order to have properly-functioning vision.

How to treat dry eyes?

The most obvious choice for treating the dry eyes symptoms are the eye drops. But for those looking for more nature-based alternatives, there are more suitable solutions.

One of them is the flaxseed oil which has proven to be more than efficient in taking care of this problem. The flaxseed oil is under no circumstances to be applied directly into the eyes. The way to consume it is orally. The most popular form is the liquid one, but some people choose to grind the seeds and drink them in a mixture with water. The reason why flaxseed oil is so helpful lies in its high content of omega 3 fatty acids. One other thing that’s important to remember is not to take more than a spoonful of the oil per day.

Should it be established that the reason for the dry eyes problem is the lack of vitamin A in the body, the solution is, obviously, to increase the vitamin A intake. Vitamin A can be obtained from food which is rich in it or in the form of capsules. The foods that contain a great amount of vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupes and fish oil, to name a few.

A substance that is applied directly to the eyes is hyaluronic acid. This substance contains a great amount of proteins and has the record of making up for about 95% of lacking tear production. Hyaluronic acid is not only good for treating the problems that occur in the eye, but, it also has quite an effect on the eyes themselves by supplying them with the nutritious elements they require and preserving the cornea and retina intact.
