Causes of Infection
Like it is the case with all other types of piercings, industrial piercing gets infected mainly due to poor hygiene and negligence. Since, it is a single piece of jewelry in a rod shape, going through two parts of the upper ear, its size amplifies the danger of infection or any other complications. Additionally, the pain accompanying the whole piercing procedure speaks for the delicate part of one's body, easily prone to infections. Therefore, one should follow all the instructions given when he or she had that part pierced in order to rule out any possible problems.
Manifestation of the Infection
Since every piercing is simply a wound that never gets to heal, any unwanted organisms settling there may cause the infection. If you experience bleeding, swelling, pain and irritation accompanied by redness and discomfort around the pierced spot, you are most probably suffering from the above mentioned condition. It may take place soon after the piercing has been done, or it may take longer to appear.
How to Treat an Infection?
As mentioned above, taking good care of your piercing is the best means of prevention. Therefore, if the infection does take place, you are to clean the pierced spots and disinfect them. The best way to do this is by using a solution consisting of warm water and sea salt. This mixture is nature's own antibacterial solution. Thus, apply it with a sterile cotton ball onto the piercing sites. During the infection, your body will probably expel some substances around the pierced spots. Wipe those off as well. Repeat the procedure as long as you have the piercing, regardless if the infection is gone or still ongoing. Finally, be prepared for a longer recovery period and be careful during it.
Prevention
First of all, do not touch your piercing or play with it. We have numerous bacteria on our hands, and, since we are often in situations where we cannot wash them, we can easily transfer them onto our piercing spots. Therefore, touch your piercing jewel only when you clean it in order to avoid provoking complications. It is always good to consult with the piercing expert when it comes to proper hygiene or some unusual skin reactions you might experience. That way you can be sure you are doing the correct thing and choosing the adequate products for taking care of your industrial piercing. Bear in mind that this is one of the hardest types of jewelry to take care of, since it connects two pierced spots. Thus, take it seriously and take care of it if you want to enjoy it as a part of your aesthetics.
