Many women start suffering from dark spots on their faces, once they reach a certain age in life. These spots are usually brown-colored and appear around the cheeks, on arms and hands. Also, those who have a pale complexion tend to have more visible spots of this type. Women try to avoid and prolong the onset of this skin problem due to the fact that it makes them look older. Luckily, there are ways of dealing with this issue successfully.

Why Do These Spots Appear?

There are several main causes of dark spot on one’s face. Most commonly, sun exposure is the main culprit. Namely, when we sunbathe or get exposed to the sun, our body produces a pigment called melanin which gives our skin brown color and protects it from damage. Excessive exposure of this type results in increased concentration of this pigment on the surface of our skin. Alternatively, pregnancy, stress, aging, acne, hormonal imbalance, genetics, birth control pills, menopause or even liver diseases may be behind the dark spots on a woman’s face.

How to Get Rid of Dark Spots on Face?

Basically, in order to keep your skin safe from this type of discoloration, you need to make sure that it is healthy. In order for this to be true, you must protect it with proper sunscreen, even when you are not spending time outdoors. Moreover, it is good to combine a sunscreen with a protective oil-free lotion, rich in green tea or vitamin C. Alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, vitamin C and retin A are all ingredients to look for in facial care products, since these are capable of lightening your skin, removing the dark spots. However, do not overdo it, since excessive application of these products can lead to discoloration as well.

Alternatively, you might opt for intense pulsed light therapy, where the spots on your face are treated with special laser beams. The recovery period after the procedure lasts for about a week. But the results are worth the wait.

Additionally, you may choose microdermabrasion during which outer layers of your facial skin are removed by special crystals. This process is painless and does not affect your life in any way afterwards. A more invasive variant are chemical peels, where special chemicals are used for “peeling” the troublesome layer of your skin, revealing the fresh, healthy ones underneath.

Finally, if you want to battle these dark spots on your own, in the privacy of your home, you can create a mixture of lime and tomato juice and apply it onto the spots, leaving it overnight. Sandalwood with rosewater works great as an alternative. Also, honey and raw turmeric juice may be all you need for getting rid of this skin problem.
