Introduction

Candida is the yeast that is normally present on the skin, mucous membranes and in gastrointestinal tract. However, in some cases this yeast can multiply rapidly and the condition called thrush occurs. There is a variety of thrush causes. The most common infective agent that leads to thrush is Candida albicans. Apart from that yeast other species of Candida can be the culprits of this infection.

Causes of Oral Thrush

Oral thrush mostly occurs if the immune system is not functioning properly. Infants are very susceptible to oral thrush as their immune system is not mature enough to fight against the illnesses. Adults develop oral thrush in case their immune system is impaired. This infection almost always affects people ill with HIV and AIDS. Furthermore, diabetics are also susceptible to the overgrowth of this yeast. Even people who are taking immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids are more prone to yeast infection.

There are certain predisposing factors that can lead to thrush. They include excessive dryness of the mouth, pregnancy and abuse of antibiotics. In some people inappropriate hygiene of the mouth can result in oral thrush.

Causes of Vaginal ThrushIn women vaginal thrush is most frequently caused by Candida albicans. There are a lot of predisposing factors that can lead to vaginal thrush. Additionally a variety of triggers induce the infection.

Excessive usage of antibiotics is principal cause of vaginal thrush. Women who are prone to this infection are advised to use certain vaginal creams or tablets against the Candida while they are taking antibiotics. This is an excellent way of protection. However, antibiotics are not responsible for all cases of vaginal thrush. In pregnant women this infection is caused by the hormonal imbalance. The hormones change the vaginal PH and the thrush occurs. Furthermore, the women suffering from diabetes are more susceptible to yeast infection. Immunodeficiency can be the culprit of both oral and vaginal thrush.

There are additional factors that can be connected with this infection. Taking birth control pills may change the flora in the vagina. Some scientists even connect vaginal thrush with promiscuity. There is no evidence that the infection can be transmitted between sexual partners. However, in some cases even men can get affected. If this happens the treatment has to include both of the partners. During the treatment the partners need to use condoms during intercourse. Some doctors advise women to wear underwear made of only natural fibers since synthetic panties can increase the risk of vaginal yeast. Even tampons and vaginal douching have been considered as a possible cause of the infection. And finally, tight-fitting clothing should be abandoned.
