Diabetes is a chronic disorder. In this case, human body stops producing enough hormones called insulin, and as a result, blood sugar level gets high. There are various types of diabetes, type 1 and 2, for instance.

If you have it, you must do for the rest of your life the following;

-loss excessive weight (either to diet and exercise, or depending on your body mass index and other factors, you may be candidate for weight-loss / bariatric surgery)-monitor your blood sugar (few times a week or daily, depend on doctor’s advice)-to exercise regularly (walking or aerobics, at least 30 min. a day)-changing and adapt your diet (more vegetables, fruits, whole grain products, and less sweets and animal products, avoid alcohol and smoking, etc.) As for a diet itself, it does not mean that you have to choose special food for your diet. You should just adapt to healthy eating plan, to eat variety of foods in strict amounts, and keep regular mealtimes. If in doubt you can consult your dietitian.

A goal is that by choosing healthier food, you keep your blood sugar in controlled level. Your dietitian will help you to group food that is healthy for your diabetes in several categories (fruits, vegetables, meat etc,) and calculate the amount of each group in fat, calories, protein and carbohydrates. That way you can exchange groups among themselves. You can also calculate the glycemic index value of every type of food.

In keeping your diet, you must also know, that there is two typed of fat; trans and saturated fat. After find out which types of food have which kind of fat, you should choose saturated fat, and avoid trans fat completely. Best way to do that is:

-prefer canola and olive oil-also eat seeds and nuts-eat sugar free fruits-use low fat yoghurt-reduce amount of margarine and butter

Blood level of cholesterol is also very important. To avoid level cholesterol to rise in your blood, you should try the following:

-use skim milk and not the whole milk-instead eggs, use egg substitutes-eat lean cut of meat instead organ meat

Amount of carbohydrates is imperative. You should take the same amount each day, in order to prevent your level of blood sugar fluctuating. Your dietitian will help you to learn how to count daily values of carbohydrates intake. Recommended group of food includes:

-vegetables-whole grains-fruits-diary low fat products-beans, lentils and peas

Fish is also very healthy for your diet. Make sure to eat fish at least two times per week., such as salmon, tuna, herring, cod etc. Avoid fried fish.

As a general, mixture of your regular daily intake should have fats at 20-35%, protein at 15-20% and carbohydrates 45-65%.

You should keep variety in your diet and healthy-eating plan and try to change it with appropriate food groups as much as you can.
