Perricone diet is not an ordinary weight loss diet but an anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle diet that aims to reverse the aging process. This diet was designed by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, specialist in dermatology. He wrote his book “The wrinkle cure” when he concluded that certain foods lead to premature aging, obesity and other health conditions due to inflammation and water retention. The book claims that proper diet can help people look younger and healthier. Dr. Perricone’s first book was followed by two other books in which he continued to explain importance of nutrition in slowing down aging process. Basicly, Perricone diet is a 28 day program that includes lean protein, foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and sources of antioxidants. On the other hand, the diet restrict amount of foods that cause inflammation such as refined sugars, saturated fats, alcohol, coffee and others.
Allowed FoodsThe staple of the diet is fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids, especially wild Alaskan salmon. It is recommended to include salmon in a diet at least five times per week. Perricone also recommends fish like tuna, cod, shellfish, sole, trout, swordfish, halibut, and flounder. Furthermore, antioxidant foods that are allowed include nuts, green leafs, berries, turkey, mushrooms, citrus fruits, apples, kiwi, pears, peaches, cantaloupe, beans, olives, tomatoes, egg whites, oatmeal, green tea, whole barley, spring water, tofu, yogurt, low-fat milk and cottage cheese. Oregano, ginger, basil and cayenne pepper are allowed spices.
Foods to be AvoidedPerricone diet cuts out foods that cause inflammation and water retention. Such foods are breads, flour, pasta, rice, breakfast cereals, coffee, beef, duck, pizza, soda, hard cheese, red meat, butter, margarine, alcohol, granola and sugar. Fruits that should be avoided include watermelon, grapes, bananas, oranges and raisins. Vegetables that are forbidden in Perricone diet include carrots, corn, pumpkin, peas and potatoes.

Additionally, the diet promotes weight loss, decreases the risk of cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and arthritis. Reduction of swelling can eliminate acne, soften wrinkles and prevent other skin conditions. However, Perricone diet is considered to be unbalanced diet due elimination of some food groups and extreme intake of fish. Also, experts believe that diet is not safe for everyone. Diet advocates use of additional supplements that may interact with some prescription drugs, especially with anti-coagulants. The diet is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, people suffering from heart diseases and diabetes.
