Pain in the right side of the abdomen can occur due to a number of reasons.

Pain in the Right Side of the Abdomen

Stomach pain in right side is defined as the pain experienced in the right portion of the abdomen or towards the right of the belly button. Right side abdominal pain that occurs suddenly may be sharp or dull depending on the underlying cause. Right side abdominal pain can arise from problems related to any organ found on the right side of the body. These organs are the liver, right kidney, gall bladder, pancreas, duodenum, appendix, right adrenal gland, right ureter and in women the right ovary and right fallopian tube. Muscles, nerves, blood vessels and skin covering the abdominal cavity can also cause right side abdominal pain. The organ involved determines the type of pain.

Pain in the Lower Right Side of the Abdomen


Inflammation of the appendix or appendicitis is the most common reason for the right side stomach pain. Appendicitis initially starts as a dull ache and later develops into severe pain in the lower right portion of the abdomen or near the navel. Additionally, it causes nausea, vomiting and low-grade fever. Appendicitis mostly affects individuals between 12 and 30 years of age.

Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal pregnancy which develops outside the uterine cavity, usually in the fallopian tube. Ectopic pregnancy causes sudden severe pain in the lower right abdomen in combination with vaginal bleeding and dizziness.


It is the inflammation of the diverticula in the colon. Diverticulitis causes sudden, intense pain in the lower right abdomen, abdominal tenderness, nausea, vomiting and changes in the bowel habits.

Kidney Stone

Kidney stone may produce extreme and excruciating right side abdominal pain that may move towards the genitals and back region.

Pain in the Upper Right Side of the Abdomen


Upper right abdominal can be due to inflammation of the pancreas, the condition known as pancreatitis. This pain may sometimes extend through the side and back. The pain is typically aggravated by a large meal or drinking. Pancreatitis also causes swollen and tender abdomen, nausea and vomiting.


Gallstones are solid stones made of cholesterol, calcium salts and bile that develop in the gallbladder. This condition is accompanied with right side stomach pain, which begins in the upper right side of the abdomen and may spread to the right shoulder, right upper back or chest.

Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia occurs when upper part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm. It cases upper right abdominal pain and pressure, chest pain, heartburn, acid reflux and nausea.

Other Causes

Pain in the right side of the abdomen can be also experienced due to gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Crohn’s disease, bowel cancer, viral hepatitis, stomach ulcers, lactose intolerance, pelvic inflammatory disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, twisted ovarian cyst, constipation, diarrhea, urinary tract infection and food poisoning.
