Also known simply as “the itch”, this is a skin condition
caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. This mite burrows into one’s skin,
causing symptoms like itching, and burrow marks where the mite has entered the
skin. Although some people only feel mild symptoms, with others, the symptoms
are so severe that they cannot sleep at night sometimes.
This is a highly contagious skin condition, and it can be
transferred from a person to person by close physical contact (and, rarely, by
sharing clothing or bedding with an infected person). It is not uncommon for an
entire family, school class, or child care group to have mites at the same
time. This is why doctors recommend treatment for entire families or contact
groups, even though some might not have them.
This is not a serious health condition, but because it can lead to complications (such as impetigo) if left untreated, it is recommended that one consult a doctor as soon as the first symptoms have presented themselves. The goal of the treatment is to kill the mite, and this can be done by various topical creams and lotions.
Various home remedies and natural treatments are being used
for the treatment of scabies. Because scabies is not a serious health
condition, even some doctors recommend that the patient try with some more natural
approaches, so as to avoid certain side-effects that the medical treatment may
bring about. One of the most efficient natural treatments for this skin
condition is neem oil.
Neem oil has been used for treating scabies for decades now.
It has been proven to have various anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and healing
properties. This beneficial quality of neem oil comes from the presence of high
percentage of triterpenoids, triglycerides and other steroid compounds.
only does it kill the mite, but it also relieves the itching, reduces the pain,
gives a soothing effect to the skin, and prevents secondary infections.
There are various ways in which one can use neem oil. These include:
- Direct application. One should apply concentrated neem oil onto the affected area. This provides instant relief and helps reduce the inflammation caused by the mite.
- Neem oil in baths. For the best result, in a bathtub filled with water, two tablespoons of pure neem oil and some amount of neem leaf tincture should be added. Then, soaking oneself in it for about 15 minutes should help one relieve the symptoms of scabies. After that, it is advisable that one apply a neem based lotion on the affected area.
- Neem oil capsules. In most stores, neem oil is available in the form of capsules. This is also a good way of treating scabies. However, they should not be used that often.
- Neem oil soap. This is another effective way of treating scabies. It also has an anti-inflammatory effect, it killes the mite, and it eases the symptoms.
