Scabies-Overview
Also known simply as “the itch”, this is a skin conditioncaused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. This mite burrows into one’s skin, causing symptoms like itching, and burrow marks where the mite has entered theskin. Although some people only feel mild symptoms, with others, the symptomsare so severe that they cannot sleep at night sometimes.
This is a highly contagious skin condition, and it can betransferred from a person to person by close physical contact (and, rarely, bysharing clothing or bedding with an infected person). It is not uncommon for anentire family, school class, or child care group to have mites at the sametime. This is why doctors recommend treatment for entire families or contactgroups, even though some might not have them.
This is not a serious health condition, but because it canlead to complications (such as impetigo) if left untreated, it is recommendedthat one consult a doctor as soon as the first symptoms have presentedthemselves. The goal of the treatment is to kill the mite, and this can be doneby various topical creams and lotions.
