Constipation as a problem and the main causes

Constipation is a gastrointestinal disorder that results in irregular bowel movements, frequently followed by strains and stools that are hard to pass. This is a very common problem today, and the number of people suffering from it is constantly in rise. The list of the reasons that may lead to constipation is rather long, but some of the most common ones are dehydration, inadequate intake of fluid or fibers, physical inactivity, particular medications, too frequent use of laxatives, and changes in daily habits and lifestyle due to aging, pregnancy, some diseases, or even travel. Constipation rarely indicates some serious conditions, and in most of the cases, it is treated easily, but if left untreated, it can cause serious problems and complications.

Herbs that can help with constipation

Besides the changes in lifestyle, which usually refer to the changes in diet and introduction of exercises, this problem can be treated with laxatives, so-called 5-HT-4 agonists, or even alternative methods such as acupuncture, massage and homeopathic remedies. However, the fact is that more and more people turn to herbs and herbal preparations much rather.

Some of the most widely used herbs are burdock, cascara sagrada, dandelion, hawthorne berry, milk thistle, and Senna. Burdock has many beneficial features, but it is also a mild diuretic and laxative, which helps in the process of removing the toxins from the body, and it can be found in the form of capsule, tea and tincture.

Cascara sagrada is one of the herbs known for its safety, and it has features similar to those of antibiotics, which makes it extremely useful in fighting off the harmful bacteria from the intestines.

Dandelion aids in fat digestion, and it is officially recommended as a diuretic, which is helpful in relieving the symptoms related to constipation, such as swelling and bloating.

Hawthorne berry and milk thistle are also very often used in order to help in digestion, and in the treatment of bowel disorders, while Senna is definitely one of the most efficient helpers when it comes to constipation and problems with slow bowel movements. However, since it speeds up the metabolism and digestion, it is not recommended to use it for more than a week, because it will prevent the colon from absorbing enough of the nutrients. It is also necessary to pay attention to the doses when using this herb, and it is perfectly safe except in cases of people who suffer from diarrhea, pain in the stomach or some disease of colon. Pregnant women should not use it, either.
