Foot cramps

Many people experience the sudden pain and involuntary contraction in the leg or foot and those contractions are called cramps. They can last from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes, and can occur at any time of the day or night. If you experience foot cramps, you can feel a severe pain in that area of the leg and you should know some of the treatment methods in order to help yourself if successfully.

Causes of foot cramps

There are various causes of foot cramp and they all need a specific treatment. You need to rest your feet enough, because in most cases, foot cramps occur due to some kind of a stress. Poor blood circulation can also affect the foot cramp. You need to know that walking or standing for a long period of time will result in foot cramps. Lack of vitamins such as vitamin D, calcium, and potassium and liquids like water, milk or juice can cause foot cramps. On the other side, certain health conditions such as Parkinson`s disease, multiple sclerosis or diabetes can be responsible for foot cramps as well. If you happen to experience foot cramps quite often, you should definitely consider quitting smoking and reducing the intake of alcohol.

Other causes of foot cramps can be environmental toxicity, hormonal imbalance, Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis. The additional weight of the baby on the feet during pregnancy can also cause this problem in mothers.

Treatments for foot cramps

There are various treatments of foot cramps. If you experience a sudden foot cramp, you should lie down and try to relax the muscles of the leg, but you can also massage the area of the foot affected by a cramp. Flexing the toes can also be really effective in reducing the pain of foot cramps. In order to reduce the pain and relax the muscles of the leg, you can take a warm bath or hot shower. On the other hand, you can also use ice pack to do the same. Some people wrap the elastic bandage around the affected area of the foot to reduce the pain.

In case you can`t stand the pain caused by foot cramps, then you can take some pain killers after the specialist gives you the prescription. Doing regular exercises and stretching on daily basis can prevent you from having foot cramps. Be aware of what you eat and make sure that you take lots of vegetables and fruits. Foods that are rich in potassium are potato, cauliflower and banana, and they are very good for you if you want to prevent foot cramps. Also make sure that you take the additional amount of vitamins in case you lack them. Around two liters of water is recommended for the overall health. Avoid smoking, drinking alcohol, wearing high heel and tight shoes.
