There are certain types of food and specific food items that have been proven to help with weight loss. They are great for suppressing the appetite and the cravings, but, more importantly, they possess certain qualities that make them very efficient in calorie burning.

Fruit

Apples have an amazing reputation and they are often considered one of the healthiest foods in the world. Aside from offering a great daily dose of vitamins and other important nutrients, they also promote weight loss. This is partially because they elevate the blood sugar levels in a gentle, non-invasive way, and keep them high longer than other foods, which results in lower appetite.

Berries are also highly recommended, mostly for the same reason as apples. They also contain a lot of fiber, which leads to lesser calorie absorption. Another great fruit for dieters is grapefruit. Grapefruit is an important part of many diets, and there is even a diet called “the grapefruit diet” which relies greatly on this fruit.

Figs are very low in calories and rich in protein. Like apples and berries, they contribute to a feeling of fullness and prevent overeating.

Kiwi is another great option. It is very healthy, with a high content of vitamin C, and it contains only a small amount of calories.

Vegetables

Broccoli is one of the most popular vegetables, probably because it is so healthy. It has cancer-fighting properties, it contains no fat or sodium and it is rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Cabbage comes from the same family as broccoli and it has even less calories. It is packed with vitamins and it is believed to be able to prevent certain forms of cancer, especially the colon cancer. In addition, cabbage is very low in calories, which means it can be consumed in large amounts.

One average-sized carrot contains only 55 calories but it is packed with vitamins. It is recommended to eat a carrot whenever cravings start. It makes a much better snack than fast food and store-bought snacks.

Other vegetables that are believed to have fat-burning properties include lettuce, onions, leeks, collard greens, chicory, beet, kale and turnip.

Other fat-burning foods

Aside from fruit and vegetables, there are other foods that have the ability to burn fat. Those include fish, especially lean fish, oats, buckwheat, corn, poultry, cottage cheese, mustard, peas, chickpeas, beans, lentils and even coffee. Green tea is also an excellent aid in any weight-loss program.

The best way to benefit from these foods is to combine them and to divide them into smaller but more frequent meals. That way the metabolism will work faster and more fat will be burned.
