The Atkins Diet
The Atkins diet is a very popular, low carbohydrate diet created by Dr. Robert Atkins to help people to reduce their weight in short period of time. Dr. Atkins believes that obese people consume too much carbohydrates that our bodies burn for energy while fat remains intact. When carbohydrates are restricted in diet, the body starts burning stored fat for energy which consequently leads to weight reduction. This means if a person wants to lose weight the diet must be high in fat and proteins and low in carbohydrates. This diet also claims to provide better overall health.
The Atkins diet has 4 phases: induction phase, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance phase and lifetime phase. Induction phase includes intake of carbohydrates below 20 g per day. A dieter is allowed to eat vegetables, and fish and poultry in smaller amounts. Ongoing weight loss refers to slightly increased carbohydrates intake as well as slight increase in the amount of vegetables. Pre-maintenance phase includes intake of carbohydrates that is increased by 10 g each week as long as it results in weight loss. The final phase means you can eat variety of foods but you still have to limit the amount of carbohydrates you consume.
Zone DietZone diet is another popular diet that consists of 30% protein, 30% fat and 40% carbohydrates. Small amount of protein is allowed at every meal. Best carbohydrates include whole grains, vegetables, lentils, beans and fruits. Fats that are allowed include low fat cheese and milk, egg whites and egg substitutes to whole eggs. Such balanced diet provides fats weight reduction plus desserts are not forbidden.
Cabbage Soup DietCabbage soup diet includes consuming only cabbage soup along with some other low-calorie foods for one week. This means that a dieter has to eat cabbage soup for every meal and supposedly lose 10 pounds after 7 days. This is strictly short term diet because there are associated side effects due to poor nutrition and insufficient calorie intake. A dieter should take multivitamin supplements each day.
