Coffee grounds left over the morning pot of coffee are usually tossed, but they can actually be used once more for a good purpose. They make an excellent anti-cellulite remedy, because of the presence of caffeine in them. They are also an exfoliant, which removes dead skin cells and leaves the skin smoother and more toned.
Cellulite is a common skin condition that affects both sexes, although it is more common in women. It usually collects on the hips, thighs, stomach, buttocks and upper arms and it is characterized by “orange peel” bumpy appearance, especially if the skin is slightly pinched.
One of the main causes of cellulite is the accumulation of toxins underneath the skin, inside fatty tissues. It is not necessarily associated with body weight, as even very slim people can suffer from it.
Caffeine is a natural diuretic found in coffee beans and in coffee beverages. A diuretic is a substance that promotes elimination of fluids from the body. Caffeine is also a stimulant, and aside from simulating the brain function and general body performance, it also increases the blood circulation.
Caffeine is found to be quite useful against cellulite, both because of its diuretic and stimulating properties.
How to use coffee grounds for cellulite
Coffee grounds saved from brewing a pot of coffee can be used for massage, as a body wrap or in showering.
Massaging a handful of coffee grounds with circular motions on the areas affected by cellulite can be done while showering and it is a great remedy against cellulite, but it has to be done regularly and frequently. Caffeine in coffee grounds reduces the water in the cells and improves the appearance of cellulite.
Coffee grounds can be used for massaging outside the shower too. They should be mixed with body lotion or vegetable oil, and massaged into the skin with circular and up and down motions for 20 to 30 minutes. The mixture should be removed with warm, wet washcloth, and it is recommended to take a warm shower afterwards. The skin may become reddish after this massage, but this is good as it indicates increased circulation and thus faster elimination of toxins from the fat deposits.
Coffee grounds can be used in a body wrap. They should be mixed with equal amount of body lotion and applied all over the body, concentrating particularly on the areas where the cellulite is more pronounced. The body should then be covered with plastic wrap, which should stay on for 20 minutes before rinsing the mixture off in the shower.
