Every action a human being takes — including those you never think about, because they just happen on their own, like breathing or heart beats — requires some energy to bes spent. This energy is replenished through proper and healthy nutrition, as well as sufficient rest. Sometimes, a person spends entire days working hard and the feelings of tiredness that slowly creep up on them last for prolonged periods of time. Some people feel tired all the time and they also experience lightheadedness, body aches and dizziness, in spite of resting properly and ingesting food with high nutritional values. If a person feels tired all the time, a doctor should be consulted because chronic fatigue may be an indication of a serious underlying condition.
What are the Causes of Chronic Fatigue?
The perpetual feeling of tiredness may be caused by numerous ailments and conditions. One of the most common causes of constant tiredness is anemia. It is a condition in which a person has insufficient amounts of red blood cells, which are needed to carry oxygen to all the cells in the human body. Oxygen is essential in digesting food and releasing energy.
Anemia is sometimes related to serious conditions cancer, kidney failure, rheumatoid arthritis, internal or external blood loss (including caused by menstruation). Anemia is more common in women because of menstrual cycles that involve bleeding and excess amounts of iron needed during pregnancy and breastfeeding. One of the most common causes of anemia is, however, an iron deficiency, which is relatively easily treated with supplements.
Diabetes may be another cause of constant tiredness because glucose fuels the release of energy in the cells. People who suffer from type 2 diabetes have from high levels of glucose in the blood and their bodies cannot use the glucose to provide energy so they feel perpetual tiredness. Another cause may be a condition known as hypothyroidism. The thyroid is a gland that regulates the metabolism and secretes hormones. It is placed at the front portion of the neck. Hypothyroidism involves a hormone deficiency which leads to constant tiredness because the thyroid is slow. Numerous sleep disorders can also be the cause of feeling tired all the time. The most common ones include insomnia and sleep apnea. The human body requires sleep in order to function properly and rejuvenate and repair its cells.
Insomnia is a condition in which a person suffers from lack of sleep while sleep apnea is characterized by an interrupted sleep caused by obstructed breathing. Other reasons may include chronic fatigue, degenerative diseases, excessive alcohol or drug abuse and medication side effects. In order to prevent the feeling of tiredness one should develop good sleeping habits, establish a balanced diet which does not contain processed foods, exercise regularly, drink abundant amounts of water on a daily basis and avoid caffeine intake as much as possible.
Finally, mental health reasons can also be resonsible for chronic tiredness — depression and high stress levels can both make a person tired all the time, as can post traumatic stress disorder, which can induce nightmares that prevent restorative sleep.
