History

This particular variety of candy has in the course of time become an extremely desirable treat, especially in the United States of America and Canada respectively. Its prime time is considered to be around holidays, particularly around one of America’s all time favorite one – the Halloween.

Candy corn was first introduced to the general public by George Renninger back in 1880. Since then, according to the tradition, it is available in a very color-appealing bundle of joy, i.e. every candy is tricolored – bottom is yellow, central part is reserved for orange and the tip for white. As far as the size is concerned, every piece is of approximately the same size as the real corn kernel. Given the fact that its basic ingredient is sugar, it can be deduced that it is fairly sweet and most off all, packed with calories. This certainly is a valid cause for concern in many people.

Calorie-count

The data that is provided by the NCA (i.e. the National Confectioners Association) reveal that amount greater than 20 million pounds is sold on a yearly basis, and everybody will agree that this is quite a lot of calories people come directly in contact with. If we take 40 g of candy corn (approx. 22 serving size pieces), this means we will be “blessed” with no less than 140 calories, which further means that every piece of the candy corn has in it 6.4 calories, as well as 28 g of sugar. On the other hand, they are fat-free, but contain around 115 mg of sodium.

Main elements

The candy corn used to include only sugar, salt, corn syrup and they used to be its basic ingredients. But as the time went by, people kept coming up with novelty ideas, which made the candy corn suite more to their needs and tastes, primarily. What this means is that, in the course of time, the candy corn slowly broadened its list of ingredients, with certain changes in the quantities of some older ones as well. Some people tend to go that far in indulging themselves, that even those basic colors were changed in order to satisfy their individual preferences. Today the, more or less, a standard recipe for making candy corn boils down to the following ingredients:
