Causes of Pain on the Right Side of the Waist
Pain along the waistline may be caused by an abnormal function of any of the organs in the pelvic region of the body. Depending on the cause of the problem, waist pain might be mild or severe, and it can be aching, stabbing, or throbbing.
Sitting and sleeping in an improper position for long periods of time may lead to a pain located on the right side of the waist. This type of pain is more of an ache and it doesn’t last for a long period of time in most cases.
Additional and more serious causes of the pain on the right side of the waist might be certain kidney diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, pelvic inflammatory disease, or in some cases ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy or appendicitis. If the pain you are feeling lasts for several hours and is severe, you should consult your doctor without delay.
Kidney diseases are known to be associated with pain on the right side of the waist. Anything that affects the kidneys, including trauma, injuries, infections, or abnormal functioning of these organs can be felt as the pain along the waistline. Injuries or abnormalities of the right kidney usually cause pain on the right side of the waist as well. Various infections of the kidneys and kidney stones formed from excess calcium or uric acid are also connected to pain in lower abdomen and the lower back.
Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS for short is more likely to be seen in women. This condition can also lead to pain in the abdominal areas and the lower back as one of the symptoms. Other signs may include bloating, stomach or abdominal cramps, and alternating episodes of severe diarrhea and constipation.
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is caused by a bacterial infection, and characterized by an inflammation of the female reproductive organs. This condition is one of the most common causes of the right sided waist pain in women. If left untreated, pelvic inflammatory disease will continue to rage through the reproductive system, potentially leading to infertility.
How Is Pain on the Right Side Of Your Waist Treated?
Since waist pain on your right side is a symptom rather than a diagnosis, it goes without saying that to receive adequate treatment, you first have to get an accurate diagnosis. A physical exam, X ray, and MRI scan may be necessary to determine the cause of the pain on the right side of your waist, and your doctor may also run blood tests, a urine analysis, and other lab tests.
The course of the treatment will be determined according to the cause of the problem:
- Kidney diseases may require drugs or even surgical intervention. Smaller kidney stones might need no medical assistance but larger ones may have to be surgically removed.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome is usually treated with medications, but patients need to identify the triggers of this condition and avoid everything that worsens their IBS symptoms.
- Antibiotic medications are the treatment option for people suffering from pelvic inflammatory disease or urinary tract infections that have reached the kidneys, since this is a bacterial infection and patients usually respond well to these drugs.
