Omeprazole is a drug which is used for reducing the amount of acid that is produced in stomach.
Before using this drug, the patient must introduce the doctor with a health history. Omeprazole tablets can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs while the treatment lasts. There are several cases when Omeprazole is not recommended. Pregnant and breastfeeding women must inform their physician about that. Furthermore, patients with heart problems or kidney and liver diseases must be careful when using this drug. It is recommended to drink water as much as possible during the treatment with this drug.
As with most medications, Omeprazole also has some side effects. The appearance of the side effects depends and varies from person to person but they are often mild and not very serious. The person who takes this drug usually complains of headaches and increase of body weight. Nausea, vomiting, tremors, and shakings are also very usual. Swelling of the throat is very common when using this medicine. The occurrences of diarrhea, constipation, anorexia, irritable colon, flatulence are examples of gastrointestinal side effects. Yellowing of the skin or eyes or cool, pale skin is also likely to happen. Angioedema of the face, extremities, lips, tongue, glottis, and larynx have been reported in patients treated with Omeprazole. This may occur at any time during the treatment. Moreover, the patient may complain of renal side effects such as renal failure, rise in serum creatinine, and interstitial nephritis. In addition to these side effects, there are even several more, such as problems with breathing, and heart or cardiovascular problems: tachycardia, bradycardia, and arrhythmias as well as angina, hypertension, and peripheral edema.
Apart from above mentioned side effects there have been cases in which the following problems occurred: dark urine, reduced urination, serious allergic reactions such as rash and hives, joint pain and the loss of hair. Many patients even reported depression, nervousness, hallucinations, confusion, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, dream disturbances, and apathy as the psychiatric side effects, while they were on this treatment. A considerable number of patients even have the lack of sexual interest or reported impotence, urinary tract infection, pyuria, urinary frequency, proteinuria, hematuria, glycosuria, and testicular pain while using Omeprazole as a medication. All these side effects are genitourinary side effects.
Of endocrine side effects, gynecomastia, breast swelling in females, and breast tenderness are common, while hepatic side effects consist of the increase in serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, and unusual cases of hepatitis and hepatic encephalopathy.
