Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition with symptoms that include thickened red skin with silvery and scaly patches. It is an inflammatory condition that affects both men and women and usually starts between ages 15 and 30. It is not contagious.

Psoriasis is caused by hereditary factors, problems in metabolism of amino acids and proteins, seasonal changes, injury and infections.

Types of psoriasis

Plague psoriasis is the most common type. It can appear on almost all parts of the body and the skin becomes red, raised and scaly. Guttate psoriasis causes small red spots on the skin, in pustular psoriasis white bumps filled with puss are surrounded by red skin, in inverse psoriasis smooth lesions form in skin folds and erythrodermic psoriasis is characterized by red, itchy skin.

Home remedies for psoriasis

A hot bath with Epsom salts can bring relief to skin affected by psoriasis, especially if followed with olive oil applied to the skin.

Seawater is also beneficial for psoriasis so it is recommended to spend time at the beach or in a spa that has a seawater pool.

Mudpacks are also good for psoriasis because they absorb toxins from the skin.

Exposure to sunlight is also highly recommended, as long as it is not excessive, because sunburns can seriously damage the healthy skin and aggravate the skin affected by psoriasis.

Bitter gourd can be used to make an effective remedy for psoriasis. A cup of fresh bitter gourd juice mixed with a cup of fresh limejuice should be taken on empty stomach every morning for six months.

Vitamin E therapy is often recommended for persons who have psoriasis. The recommended dosage is 200-800 I.U.

Lecithin can also improve skin affected by psoriasis and relieve the itch. It is recommended to take six to nine lecithin capsules per day.

A great natural remedy is to apply aloe vera juice and garlic oil. Cashew nut oil can be applied every night on thoroughly cleaned skin.

Wheat germ oil and castor oil can be combined to make an effective psoriasis lotion. The lotion is made from one teaspoon of wheat germ oil, one teaspoon of castor oil and one cup of sunflower oil. This lotion should be applied daily to the affected skin.

Two drops of calendula oil and one drop of oregano oil mixed in small cup of olive oil also make a good lotion for psoriasis.

In case, the scalp is affected by psoriasis it can help to boil four marigold heads in four cups of water for a couple of minutes, let it cool and apply to the scalp.
