The foot arches are formed by 24 different bones. The arch is shaped by the way the bones fit with each other. The muscles and the ligament provide the secondary support. Arch pain occurs each and every time a problem occurs affecting any of these aforementioned structures or their interactions.
Causes of arch pain
Since arches absorb and return a lot of force they are pretty much prone to different types of injuries. The most common causes of arch pain include stress fractures, direct force trauma, overuse, tightness of the joints, ligament sprains, poor biomechanical alignment and muscle strains. Another common cause may be the plantar fascia injury which is characterized by pain and inflammatory conditions.
Numerous different types of muscle injuries, bruises and sprains may interfere with the biomechanics of the foot and cause severe arch pain. Stress fractures may also occur, caused by single twist or blow or perhaps by means of repetitive overuse. Repetitive movement can also lead to other conditions such as arch joint arthritis. Symptoms of arch pain
The most common symptoms include tenderness and pain on the bottom side of the foot. Point tenderness and loose joints may also indicate that a ligament sprain has occurred at some area of the foot. Fractures may also be indicated by point tenderness but with lumps and rotated toes as well. Bruises may also be present in certain cases and they may be accompanied by swelling and skin discoloration at the specific area of the injury.
Treatment of arch pain
Self care at home may include ice, plenty of resting, compression and elevation, once the problem gets noticed. Certain non-prescription medications can also be used in order to relieve pain and discomfort. Acetaminophens are efficient in relieving the pain while Aspirin may be beneficial in reducing the inflammations. Corrective and rehabilitative actions must be determined by a professional physician. Prophylactic measures must be used and it is recommended to buy a pair of new shoes. Sometimes, orthotics can also be used because they can come in very handy during the process of rehabilitation. Exercises that emphasize flexibility are also very beneficial for the condition.
