Oily Skin

Oily skin is a problem of many people. It is common to see oily skin in teenagers, since hormonal changes can increase the activity of sebaceous glands. This problem may persist long after puberty where heredity plays significant role. Oily face is shiny, dull colored and prone to acne, pimples and blackheads. Fortunately, there are several oily skin remedies that may improve the condition of the skin.

Causes of Oily Skin

Oily skin type is caused by greasy discharge from the sebaceous glands. This oil secretion is known as sebum. Overactive sebaceous glands produce large amount of oil that clog the skin pores and this may result in many blemishes on the skin. Production of oil is at peak during adolescence and decreases with age.

Oily skin can be caused by heredity. If one of the parents has oily skin there are big chances it will be passed to a child. Pregnancy and menopause may cause overproduction of sebum due to hormonal shifts. Certain types of birth control pills may also cause oily skin. Diet is believed to play a role as well because certain foods cause the skin to become oily. Stress may trigger excess production of sebum as well as some cosmetic items.

Oily Skin Treatment

Treatment for oily skin partly depends on the cause. You may change the cosmetics you use if you notice that is damages your skin. If your skin becomes oily because you take certain birth control pills, you simply have to discontinue. Food rich in salt, sugar and fat in some people cause skin problems hence good balanced food can solve this. On the other hand, if oily skin results from hormonal fluctuations or heredity, affected person must live with it. However, there are remedies that may help with oily skin regardless of the cause.

RemediesWashing your face regularly will improve the condition of your skin. Hot water plus soap are the best option since they are a good solvent. Still, you must avoid washing your face to often because it may stimulate the skin to produce more oil. Avoid skincare products that leave your skin dehydrated. Use oil-based products to clean the skin and cosmetics designed for oily skin.

Several natural remedies may improve skin condition. Cucumber and lemon juice applied to skin can effectively dissolve the sebum. People with excessively oily skin may add eau de cologne into this mixture. Clay mask is very effective in removing oil from the skin. Dark colored clay can absorb large amount of oil but only from the surface of the skin but it can’t clean spores deeply. Herbs that may help include: aloe vera, chamomile, burdock root, thyme, and lavender.

Diet must be rich in proteins and consist of leafy vegetables and fresh fruits. Vitamin B2 deficiency can cause skin to become oily therefore you must ensure adequate intake of foods rich in this vitamin. Vitamin B2 can be found in whole grains, beans and nuts. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and remove waste products from the body. Avoid sodas, alcohol, sugary drinks and fried foods.
