Halitosis

Halitosis or bad breath is a condition when your breath has foul odor. It is not considered to be a dangerous condition but it may have a negative impact on your social life if it is a chronic condition. Everyone has experienced bad breath at some point in the life. The situation can be quite simple. If you have just eaten certain food which has strong smell such as fish or cheese, your breath can be bad as well. After you clean your teeth, the smell should go away. However, if the smell is persistent and you cannot get rid of it with normal hygiene measures the underlying cause may be more serious.

Causes

Besides food which you have eaten, the causes of bad breath can be different. The most common cause of halitosis is bacteria on the tongue or somewhere in the mouth. Other causes may be food remains or dead cells which have not been properly cleaned from the mouth. Halitosis can be caused by gum disease or problems with teeth. The origin of bad breath may also be in your nose, especially in case of sinusitis. Problems with tonsils or throat infection can cause bad breath. In addition, acid reflux, gastritis or increased stomach acid can cause bad breath. These problems require additional treatment.

Cure

In order to get rid of bad breath quickly you should chew mint leaves. You can also put some baking soda into warm water and gargle for a few minutes. Also, gargle with natural lemon juice dissolved in water. Another natural cure for bad breath is chewing sunflower seeds. Pineapple juice can do wonders for elimination of bad breath. Hot tea without any sugar is also good for dealing with bad breath. You should eat apples every day because not only will they help you get rid of bad breath, they will also help remove bacteria from your mouth. It is recommended to eat parsley and drink yogurt every day.

Management

You should have proper mouth hygiene habits which include regular brushing and cleaning the teeth and tongue. You should never skip breakfast because this can irritate your stomach. Stop smoking because it can harm you mouth. Keep your teeth and gyms healthy and go to the dentist on a regular basis. Make sure you take enough amounts of zinc. Since various diseases such as gastritis or sinusitis can cause bad breath, you should deal with the underlying cause.
