Introduction
When we sleep, our bodyand mind are resting, which means that sleeping is necessary to recharge batteries for the next day. During sleep, our movements are not intense, we are completely relaxed and our metabolism is slower. Scientist differ 5 phases of sleep ant the first phase lasts from 5 to 10 minutes. In this stage, small disturbances can awake us and our body muscles become slower and more relaxed. The second phase is characterized by lower body temperature, regular heartbeats and breathing. In the next two stages, we sleep deeply and we are hard to wake up. Even if someone awakes us we can’t function normally immediately after sleep.
Is sleeping important?
Some people say that sleeping is a waste of time and that is definitely not true. We need to sleep because it is very healthy for our body and mind. Even tough we are usually in a hurry and have many daily tasks, we have to find time to rest. Our brain has to be rested so that we could perform our obligations easily. Those individuals who don’t sleep enough usually end up with sleeping disorders and even psychiatricconditions.
Age is the first factor that determines how much sleep we need. We all know that babies need to sleep long, for about 15 to 16 hours per day. When it comes to teenagers and adolescents, 8 to 9 hours of sleep is enough, while adults sleep 7 to 8 hours. Since we are all different, we all have different sleeping habits. Someone’s body needs 8 hours and someone else’s needs 9 hours of sleep.
What can affect our night sleep?
One of the factors that can affect negatively our sleep is environment. If we sleep in a room that is very cold or hot, very bright or noisy, we can experience difficulty to fall asleep. There are other disturbances such as kids constantly waking you up, or a partner's snoring all the time. If your sleep is disturbed by any of these things, you should do something so that your sleeping time remains intact. Sometimes, some illness can disturb our sleeping, so if you have any problems or if you are in any kind of pain, consult your doctor. This goes for some emotional or mental disturbances, since experiencing great stress can cause sleeping problems.
Without a proper sleep you will most likely become tenser, easy to get angry and irritable. That will affect your work, or any other activity you do. You will become less efficient in what ever you do. Lack of sleep can even cause some serious disorders.
