Nausea is not a medical condition and it is rather a symptom of another condition or disease. It can be a simple cause or it can be something serious, but in any case it is an unpleasant feeling that everyone wants to get rid of as soon as possible. Fortunately there are many simple and effective home remedies that can cure nausea in no time.

About nausea

Nausea is a sensation of discomfort usually coming from the upper abdomen. Some call it queasiness and some say they feel sick, and this feeling is often accompanied by an involuntary urge to vomit, which sometimes cannot be controlled. Vomiting sometimes brings relief for nausea, but sometimes the feeling goes on even after vomiting.

There are many possible causes for nausea, the most common being food poisoning, alcohol consumption, gastroenteritis, stress, overeating, motion sickness, sea sickness, food intolerances, certain medications, certain illnesses, pregnancy and chemotherapy.

Home remedies for nausea

Ginger is one of the best remedies for nausea. The best way to consume it is to prepare and drink a cup of ginger tea. Chewing on ginger slices dipped in some honey can help too. For those who do not like the taste of ginger, ginger root capsules are equally effective and they are available in health stores.

Small sips from a glass of water with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in it are also very helpful. Lemon water also brings relief for nausea. Alternatively, one teaspoon of baking soda can be diluted in a glass of water that should be drank immediately.

Foods rich in fiber are highly recommended against nausea. Bananas are a traditional cure for nausea, and other fiber-rich foods include brown bread, applesauce and plain rice. It also helps to drink rice water, which is the water left over after boiling some rice.

Chewing fresh peppermint leaves can soothe the upset stomach and relieve nausea. Wheat germ in a half a cup of milk drank every half an hour is another effective remedy for nausea.

Chamomile or peppermint tea is a traditional remedy for nausea. It is recommend to drink two to three cups of these herbal infusions a day. They can even be combined.

Certain pressure points can be stimulated to relieve nausea. Those points are located on the underside of the wrist, approximately half an inch from the hand. The pressure points on each hand should be pressed with the index finger for two or three minutes.

Until the nausea subsides, it is recommended to stay away from hot, spicy and very salty foods and to keep hydrated.
