Dental Hygiene

Proper dental hygiene is very important for many reasons. First of all, it keeps your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. There are a lot of bacteria in the mouth which can cause numerous health problems. Almost every person has had a toothache in the lifetime. It can be quite painful and troublesome condition. Secondly, proper dental hygiene prevents chronic bad breath. Bad breath can have a negative impact on our social life. You should brush and floss your teeth and clean the tongue a few times a day.

One of the herbs which are recommended for oral hygiene is amla. It is an Ayurvedic herb which stimulates healing of connective tissue and it has a positive impact on your gums. Other herbs which are good for healthy gums are hawthorn berry and bilberry fruit. An herb with excellent antibacterial properties is licorice root. It can also reduce plaque. Mouth ulcers are a result of vitamin deficiency or food allergies. This painful and bothersome condition can be cured with gotu kola, an herb which heals wounds and improves the condition of connective tissues. A well known herb, chamomile, is also good for mouth ulcers. The best option for treating mouth ulcers is licorice root. It can cure the damaged tissue and reduce the inflammation.

Food

As far as food is concerned, you should have well balanced diet which will provide all necessary nutrients for healthy teeth and gums. Sugar is a major cause for tooth decay. If you want your teeth to be healthy you should avoid food which contains sugar. Such food includes cookies, candies and cereals. Dried fruits contain a lot of sugar and therefore they are not recommended. Fresh apples, on the other hand, are very good for your teeth. Apples can prevent cavity and stimulate your gums. Your diet must include a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Chewing carrot or celery will have a positive outcome on both your teeth and gums. Sugar-free chewing gum is also good because it stimulates the flow of saliva.

Prevention

In order to prevent problems with your teeth and gums you should visit your dentist on a regular basis, maintain oral hygiene and eat food that will keep your teeth and gums healthy. Avoid smoking because it can cause bad breath and your teeth may change color. People who drink excessive amounts of alcohol are at greater risk of having problems with teeth and gums.
