Acne is a very common skin problem that affects most people at some point in life. Even people who are normally not prone to acne and who have clear skin have a pimple or two every now and then. The reason for this, in most cases, lies in the type of the diet a person uses.

People who frequently have acne are well aware that certain hygienic habits and remedies that include topical products are the best way to prevent or treat this problem. However, the types of foods a person eats are just as important.

In order to successfully cure and prevent acne, it is good to know which foods are a “no-no” and which are recommended.

Anti-acne diet - foods to avoid

Greasy, oily or fatty foods should be avoided by all means during acne flare-ups. This includes fatty meats, like bacon and pork, deep-fried foods like French fries, onion rings, corn dog, chicken nuggets and similar.

Sometimes even the healthy oils, such as safflower, sunflower and olive oil, can contribute to worsening of the acne. Some oil can be used, but in small amounts and it is best if it is cold pressed and extra virgin oil.

It is also recommended to stay off sugars. This means sweets, candy, chocolate, ice cream, frozen yogurt, cakes and cookies. It also means no sodas and other sugary beverages. Alcohol is also not recommended, because it is basically sugar and in addition it damages the skin.

Anti-acne diet- foods to eat

A diet plan that aims to reduce and prevent acne is focused on healthy and natural foods. At least two meals a day should consist of fresh fruit and vegetables. Fruit juices are also a great alternative for sodas.

Whole-grain cereals, breads, pastas and other products are also very good against acne. Foods high in fiber are beneficial because they clean the colon, and a healthy colon means less chance to get an acne flare-up. It is even recommended to do a colon cleanse every once in a while.

It is vital to drink plenty of fluids, especially water and unsweetened green tea. Water flushes out of toxins and cleans the body from the inside, which reflects on the skin as well.

It is also recommended to eat more home-cooked meals and less fast food. Fast food usually contains ingredients that are not beneficial for the skin, like hidden sugars, lots of sodium, artificial additives and chemicals. It is much better to eat at home, where meals are cooked with natural ingredients.
