Menstrual bloating is one of the most frequent conditions that accompany menstruation in women. This condition refers to the sensation of fullness or swelling in the belly, which occurs before or during the menstruation. Although menstrual bleeding is not a serious health disorder, it can be very unpleasant and uncomfortable, particularly because it appears along with some other conditions, such as menstrual pain or cramps, restlessness and mood swings. However, menstrual bloating, fortunately, can be easily treated and cured.
Causes of bloating during period
Those women who smoke and consume a lot of alcohol are at higher risk to develop this condition during menstruation. Furthermore, poor and unhealthy diet is also responsible for the occurrence of menstrual bloating. However, the most frequent cause for the occurrence of bloating during the period is fluid retention in the body, which happens because of the hormonal changes that occur during the menstrual period in women. Prostaglandin is a chemical produced by the uterus, which has the role to contract the uterus walls in order to push out the uterus lining. Because of that, fluid retention and bloating occur. This bloating is accompanied also by back pain and cramping, as well as by weight gain and irritability.
Prevention of bloating during period
Menstrual bloating is a condition that occurs in some women, but not all. However, there are some preventive measures that are very effective and may stop bloating before or during the menstrual period. Since, the poor and unhealthy diet is one of the causes for the occurrence of this condition, it is crucial to stop consuming foods such as junk or fast foods. Moreover, salty foods should be also avoided because such foods tend to cause water retention and consequently bloating.
On the other hand, healthy diet consisted of fresh vegetables and fruits, fish and chicken is highly recommended. Furthermore, vitamin A and B6, as well as calcium and magnesium should be taken in high amounts during this period in women. Aloe vera pills are very effective in processing water in a woman’s body during menstruation and thus avoiding bloating. Several herbal remedies are highly recommended by many Herbalists and they are peppermint, ginger, fennel and chamomile, as well as lemon balm. These herbs are very good for the digestive system, and thus they reduce gas and bloating. For women with this problem, regular exercises are recommended because they will help in eliminating excessive water from the body.
