Wheatgrass is basically young grass of Triticum aestivum or common wheat. It is very nutritious and over the last few years it has become increasingly popular in form of wheatgrass shots or dried powder. It is sold in juice bars and health stores, and it can be made at home as well.

Wheatgrass shots are shots of concentrated wheatgrass juice. Because this juice does not taste that great for most people, shots are a very convenient way to enjoy the benefits of wheatgrass.

For general purposes and to boost the immune system and energy levels, it is recommended to take one 30 ml wheatgrass shot each day on an empty stomach, although some people prefer higher doses, usually 60 to 120 ml twice or three times a day. The recommended dosage for detoxification is one shot three or four times a day.

As mentioned above, wheatgrass shots are available in juice bars, but they are usually quite expensive so many people make their own shots from scratch.

Wheatgrass shot benefits

Wheatgrass shots are packed with many essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, protein, and most importantly, chlorophyll. It is estimated that two ounces of this beverage contain the same amount of those nutrients as three pounds of fresh vegetables.

Wheatgrass is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium, and as for the vitamins, it is rich in vitamins A, C, E and K.

Chlorophyll is probably the major asset of wheatgrass. Its structure resembles that of hemoglobin, which is why it is believed that wheatgrass juice can improve blood circulation and promote formation of red blood cells.

The chlorophyll also improves digestion, absorption of nutrients in the digestive tract, relieves constipation and promotes elimination of toxins from the body.

Wheatgrass is also rich in antioxidants, protecting the cells and tissues from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This makes wheatgrass juice a valuable ally in the prevention of cancer and other serious and life-threatening diseases.

Finally, wheatgrass regulates blood pressure and sugars, and it helps with numerous skin ailments.

How to make wheatgrass shots

Wheatgrass can be easily grown at home, all it takes is a large pot, or ideally a garden. In order to make the juice for shots, the fresh wheatgrass should be picked and rinsed under running water, chopped and placed in the juicer, with a small shot glass positioned under it. The undiluted concentrated juice obtained this way should be drank immediately.
