Kidney stones may cause a lot of pain, sometimes even comparable to the pain experienced when a woman gives birth. Having a kidney stone is not easy and most people feel the pain around the back. Sometimes, it can be felt as the pain on the side and it is usually described to affect the area under the rib cage.

Painful episodes last for several minutes or in some cases even up to 20 minutes. Persistent pain may also affect the stomach or move to the groins. Patients suffering from kidney stones frequently experience changes in the color or urine, urge to urinate more often than usual and some of them might notice blood in urine as well. Stomach pains may also be followed by nausea, vomiting and gagging. Fever and chills can also be associated with kidney stones.

What you need to do is simply to drink water – every day and all day long. Count the glasses you drink or buy a water bottle if you have to, but drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Prevent dehydration with proper amount of water and you shouldn’t have any more problems with kidney stones.

Watch your daily intake of other fluids. If you can’t tell if you use too much tea, coffee or sodas look at the color of your urine. It should be clear. If it’s not, limit the amount of mentioned drinks to one per day and your kidneys will be grateful. More than just to the color of urine, caffeine has been found to promote formation of kidney stones as well.

Be careful with what you eat. Spicy food like curry should not be your choice if you have kidney stones or want to prevent them, since the studies have associated spicy foods with higher risk of kidney stones. Also, drink less milk and skip that extra cheese, because these products might also promote kidney stones. Eat less sugar and substitute the sweets with some healthier alternatives such as various fruits. It may take some time to get used to the lack of sugar, but it is worth it in the long run.

Healthy lifestyle also includes some physical activity. Walking, hiking or anything else that will get you moving will definitely be good for prevention of kidney stones.
