Byetta

Byetta is a medication in a form of injection which is used to treat diabetes. Byetta controls the blood sugar level and stimulates the pancreas to make insulin. It is usually taken twice a day, before breakfast and dinner. If you know how you can administer the dose yourself, or a trained nurse will give you the injection. The injection site usually involves upper thigh or arm, or stomach. You must inform your doctor about any drugs, vitamins or food supplements that you are taking because Byetta should not be combined with certain medications. Also inform the doctor about any health conditions such as serious problems with the stomach and digestion, and kidney diseases.

Side Effects

Byetta has certain side effects as any medication does. It is very important for you to know the difference between the symptoms of low blood sugar and side effect of Byetta because they can be similar. The symptoms of low blood sugar are hunger, irritability, headache, weakness, faintness, tremors, fast pulse, excessive perspiration and seizures. Some of the side effects of Byetta include sickness, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, headache, heartburn, nervousness and dizziness. These side effects are not considered to be serious. The serious side effects can be problems with urination, excessive thirst or hunger, mood changes, shortness of breath, pain in the stomach, swellings, severe sickness, vomiting, tremors, impaired vision, fainting, severe headache and pain in the back. Notify you doctor if you have experienced any of these side effects so the treatment or the dose of Byetta can be adjusted.

Allergic Reaction and Overdose

If you are allergic to Byetta, you may experience the common symptoms of allergic reactions to medications. Such reactions include breathing difficulties, skin irritation and swelling of the tongue, mouth or face. Overdose reaction includes serious sickness followed by vomiting, weakness, headache, excessive perspiration, tremors, fast pulse, hunger, irritability, faintness and confusion. Contact your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of these reactions.

Precautions

Since there are not enough researches regarding the damage to the unborn baby or an infant, consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or you are breastfeeding because so the treatment can be adjusted. You should not drink alcohol because it decreases the blood sugar and it can weaken the effectiveness of Byetta. It is important to use this medication as your doctor advised. It is recommended to have something sweet to eat or drink in case you blood sugar level suddenly drops.
