Benefits of Serrapeptase

The serrapeptase enzyme has a molecular weight of 45,000-60,000Da (50.6kDa reported elsewhere) and is comprised of 470 amino acids in length; it is classified as a metalloprotease due to containing a zinc molecule which helps catalyze its enzymatic activity.
  • Serrapeptase is destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach, and as such would require enteric encapsulation in order to retain the bioactivity.
  • Serrapeptase, surprisingly, is absorbed through the intestinal wall similar to bromelain and appears to retain its enzymatic activity. It appears to be absorbed paracellularly (between cells), but does not appear to be well absorbed although it is enhanced by liposomes.
  • Serrapeptase appears to be synergistic with antibiotic drugs and molecules. Serrapeptase has the ability to reduce the biofilms produced by select bacteria and these biofilms can impair the ability of antibiotics to destroy a bacteria.
  • One study assessing the interactions of injections of proteolytic enzymes (Serrapeptase, chymotrypsin, or trypsin) and aspirin noted that all enzymes were synergistic with aspirin in acute and subacute inflammatory tests in rats; this study also noted that 90-270µg/kg serrapeptase was equivalent to 200mg/kg (oral ingestion) and was equivalent to trypsin (288-576µg/kg) and chymotrypsin (18-36mg/kg) in potency.

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme that has several health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties and as such it can be used to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, viral pneumonia, osteoporosis, bronchial asthma, sinusitis, gout and many more.

It is also an anti-clotting agent that prevents cardiovascular diseases that arise from clogged arteries. It also eliminates fibroids that obstruct coronary arteries, which is a property other anti-clotting agents do not possess.

Serrapeptase also promotes healing and recovery after injuries, accidents and traumas. It is particularly recommended after surgeries. It can also be used to relieve pain. As such, it is the healthiest possible alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are known for causing ulcers and other problems.

The serrapeptase enzyme is believed to be helpful for a wide array of illnesses, including carpal tunnel syndrome, torn ligaments, sprains and strains, varicose veins, various lung and chest problems, problems with neck and back, diabetes, flu, common cold, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, strep infections, migraine, inflammatory bowel syndrome, enlarged prostate and many more. Serrapeptase is particularly useful for problems involving ear, nose and throat, like temporary loss of hearing or smell and laryngitis. It also has an amazing effect on scar tissues and blood circulation.

Finally, serrapeptase can be used to treat fibro-cystic disease. In addition, it reduces inflammation and swelling of the breasts and keeps them firm.

Side Effects of Serrapeptase

The serrapeptase enzyme is undoubtedly very beneficial. However, some side effects have been reported by the people who have been using it.

One of the side effects of serrapeptase is the irritation of skin, especially after long-term usage of this enzyme. Aside from redness and itching, there may even be some pain and redness. In few cases, serrapeptase has caused pneumonitis or mild inflammation of the lungs.

This medicine is still new and it is yet to be subject of extensive research. For this reason, it is recommended to carefully follow the doctor’s recommendations, especially regarding the dosage. It is not known what effects can be expected from high dosages, and it is generally recommended to limit the intake of serrapeptase to the necessary minimum.
